EM--

It's actually aldactone, which is the name-brand for spironolactone. It's a diurectic (hbp med) that is also an anti-androgen--very old medication, but effective. It does, however, take about 3-6 months to see concrete results.

I took it for a while awhile twice a day. It was inturrupting my sleep b/c I had to get up ant tinkle a lot at night. I don't think that happens to everyone though. It worked well for my hair growth. 8)
If you take birth control or are interested in it, Yasmin has a derivative of spironolactone in it. That seems to help my testosterone levels too. Good luck!

might help a little with water weight, but probably nothing substantial.

Emmasmom ~

I just started taking Sprionolactone (the generic form of Aldactone) last night, too! About an hour after my first pill I felt dizzy and weird (kind of like being high?). But then I went to sleep and haven't had that this morning.

I've taken Yasmin before (which has DRSP, a dirivitive of Spiro), and it did a great job of taking the edge of the androgenic symptoms (but unfortunately caused a few others, but I'm hoping that was because of the estrogen, not the Spiro).

Weightloss: What I found was that I was pretty consistantly partially dehydrated, which brought my scale-weight down about 6 pounds, but in my 'off week' (period week on the pill) it'd come right back, so I knew it was just water weight. When I quit taking it, the 6 pounds popped right back on and stayed. But, in the interest of having a little morale-boost from the scale-poundage, it did help, I must admit! ha ha. Now that I'm taking Spiro and not Yasmin BCPs, we'll see how that works out. The big thing for me is that I know I'm going to have to drink TONS of water. For some reason the diuretic quality affects me pretty seriously, and it's really hard to get the water to "stick" to my body. Never before would I think THAT would be a problem! LOL.

Good luck, and keep me posted! :)

p.s. Are you already taking Metformin? I've always (for 7 years, anyway) taken my Metformin, anything on top of that is in addition to, not instead of, my Metformin.

i have recently started taking spiro...it's been approx. 7 days, and so far my hair shedding has stopped entirely. i continue to lose maybe 5-10 strands a day, which is nearly nothing compared to the handfuls in the past. i stopped taking met. b/c my hairloss grew dramatically worse. i think that the spiro in combination to the bc pill yaz has helped me...plus using a shampoo like nizoral is also beneficial. the only downfall of taking spiro, is the nausea, and headaches...i have come to realize if i start to feel nauseas then i need to eat a little something to bring my blood sugar up, and then if i get headaches it's bc i am not drinking enough water. a couple glasses later, and i'm great! i have also had the feeling of a ball in my throat since starting spiro. almost the same feeling as when you are about to cry. has anyone else had this problem? it seems to be getting better, or maybe i'm getting used to it. idk.

hope this helps!

Just be sure to drink plenty of fluids, and you should be fine. The only time i even notice the headache/dizzy/nausea feelings are for a few days when I increase the dose, then my body adjusts and it goes away.

Your doctor will probbaly want to check you potassiom levels eveery now and then...I don't remember if spiro can make them too high ot too low, just that it can affect them.

And it will take at least 3 months to see results, so don't get frustrated if you think it's not doing anything...give ti a good 6 months...

Good luck...
