New to Birth Control and I have ????'s

I have never taken BCP before and here's what my dr. told me today. She is going to prescribe Yasmin but I need to wait until I get my next period and then I am to start them the Sunday after I start. She also said that when I get my period to come in and have a pregnancy test. I am confused if I get my period doesn't that indicate that I am not pregnant so why the need for the test? My husband I are currently not using any form of birth control and I am on Metformin as well. I just had my last period last week. We have been trying to conceive for a year with no luck but the dr. wants me to lose 30lbs first so that is the reason now for the BCP.

Ladies get pregnant on met alone...sometimes you THINK you started your period and in fact it was implantation bleeding...the pregnancy test is to cover all the bases...
I in fact was forced to take a pregnancy test in 2001...I had not had a period for 3 months (at which time I stopped BCP to TTC again). Low and behold, positive... it was the best surprise ever. I was rushed in for an u/s and saw the heartbeat....Unfortunately, I lost the baby 3 weeks after. Almost everyone woman miscarries at some point in her life...some are just blessed to not be aware of it.
