While taking BCP will "override" your body and make your periods regular again, it does not "cure" PCOS. As Insulin Resistance seems to be the root cause of PCOS, if you don't treat the IR, you won't truely make much headway with the PCOS.

This is why many women with PCOS take Metformin (aka glucophage, or Met), which is an insulin re-sensitizer. Another option is Cinnamin, which does the same basic job, but is much gentler on your system.

As for the connection with Asthma, I'm not really sure. I can't take BCP, myself (I get HORRIBLY sick with it, including migranes, etc.), but I thought I'd throw in that little bit of info.

HTH!!! Good luck!!! 8)

I had horrible asthma and allergies for years. I don't know what did the trick, but about the same time I came off the pill, I started taking Singulair with Loratadine (Claritin) and both got better. I've always attributed it to the Singulair but maybe there was some connection to the pill. My suggestion is to ask dr about taking a really low dose BCP maybe even a mini-pill and the lowest dose met, 500mg. Perhaps this will help with both extremes. But, I'm no doctor, and have never experimented with this coctail of drugs, so it's just an idea.

I think the mini-pill idea is a good one, but most women w/ PCOS don't really respond to only 500 mg/day of Met. Usually, the bare minimum is considered to be between 1000 mg/day to 1500 mg/day.

Cinnamon dosages are between 1000 mg/day (minimum) and 4500 mg/day.

Unfortunately, kaylafgr, your doc is WRONG!!!

PCOS is NOT just about fertility and periods. You have a much higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, stroke, uterine cancer (if you don't bleed at least once every 3 months), etc., etc., etc., not to mention how it can affect your quality of life.

I would find yourself a new doc if I were you, and get the help you need!
