I have been on met 500 mg once daily for 3 months now. I have now learned that it isn't a therapeutic dose to induce a period. My doc will see me in a month to evaluate. He must know that this dose is not therapeutic? How could he not? I WILL NOT go off my birth control until I receive a therapeutic dose, otherwise all the bad stuff shows up... hair, pimples, some weight. I am a small person, 125 lbs, so do you think that is why he put me on such a low dose? What is the best way to get the dose I want? Can I just call his office and speak with his nurse? Are there dangers with a higher dose in thin pcosers? Thanks for the input.

I'm only on 500mg too. My doc thinks for now since I've had such positive effects that we shouldn't up the dosage. I'm fine with that because I haven't had any side effects and don't know if they'll appear with a higher dosage. For me as long as I feel and see that this dosage is working I don't feel the need for a higher dosage. The day may come where it will need to be increased, but until then I'm not worried.

Talk to your doc about it at your next appointment. Find out why it hasn't been increased before you request more. He may have a good reason.

i started at 500mg and after almost a year was upted to 850 both were 2x a day though. Keep taking it and talk to your doctor about the concerns you have about theraputic doses

I'm also on 500mg of Met. It seems to be working for me so far, but this may be because I am on the border line of being insulin resistant and my doc didn't think I would need that much to regulate me. The side effects have been minimal and I happy for that. Speak to your doctor about your concerns.

Hi there,

I've been on Met 2000 mg a day since December and just am starting to get my system on track. From being on this forum a while, I'd strongly say that most of use that have had success with Metformin have had to take the higher dosage for at least 6 months.

This said, every time you up your dosage (500 to 1000 to 1500 to 2000), you're changing your body chemistry and your body has to acclamate itself (no fun here). That's most likely why your doctor hasn't up'ed the dosage yet, and it could be because of how thin you are; you'd really have to ask the doctor.

I actually took the iniative to ask my doctor about up'ping the dosage. Some doctors are only comfortable at certain dosages because the higher dosages affect the liver, etc... and need to be monitored regularly. Most gynos won't give you the higher dosages......you'll need to start going to a reproductive endocrinologist. Avoid some frustations when you call a new doctors office upfront.....ask if they work with higher metformin dosages, and you may even want to ask know if they mix med's like clomid with metformin when needed. Doing some upfront investigating will save you time and definitely frustrations.
