Hi, I just found this site. I am 38 yrs. old, and have been suffering with PCOS since my teenage years. No one ever really diagnosed me ... until today. I always heard I "may have symptoms" of PCOS. But no real diagnoses. My gyno put me on met about 5 years ago when I couldn't take not getting periods, and how I felt. I had no results. Maybe his dosage was too low. Today a new endo started me on 500mg for the next two months. She is the one is said it sounds like PCOS. Is 500 mgs too low? I have every classic symptom of PCOS. Now getting facial hair, not being able to lose weight, skin tags, adult acne, etc. I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I am sick of dieting and not losing weight. People think I must just sit around and eat all day. I was hitting the gym 4 days a week, 1 hour a day for a year, and no results, not one inch. I am in a deep depression, but need to control it because of my two sons. Both of which I took chlomid and had ovarian drilling to have. My husband is not supportive, and thinks my mood swings are me just being rotten. I can't help how I feel. I take provera to get my periods because not getting them drives me insane. My family has a high risk of breast cancer so not gyno will put me on the pill. Does anyone know if the 500 mg are enough? I am tired of looking like "I let myself go", as my husband has told me. It's not my fault. It's the cards I was dealt.

1500mg is considered the "therapuetic dosage" where the most women will see benefits from Met. That being said, everyBODY is different, so 500mg may work for some and others may need 2000mg. Most docs will start you at 500mg for a week and titrate you up to 1000mg, then another week to 1500mg if needed. It helps to reduce s/e's to slowly increase the meds.

I started taking 500mg twice a day in July. I had my first period since I was a teenager 28 days after starting the Metformin and became pregnant two weeks later, so a low dosage works for some.

Hi NJmom!
Just wanted to welcome you to the boards and hope you find it useful! I know that I have. I'm sorry to hear that your husband is not very supportive of your PCOS. I can totally relate to that. My boyfriend doesn't see the big deal of it all and thinks it's funny that I have to shave more than he does...sure makes a girl feel beautiful :? but anyways...also wanted to mention that I'm only on 500 mgs of metformin too. i was up to 1500 mgs about 5 yrs ago but dang was it torture so I bumped myself down to a level that I could at least tolerate...probably wasn't the best idea but was better than being a bear in hibernation all the time. i'm still trying to slowly progress up to 1000 mgs b/c doc said that should be the lowest dosage in order for it to be effective but like JE said a lower dosage may work for some....hope that helps! :)
