I started Met on 10/31. Began with 1000mg Met XR once a day. First few days I had some mild GI issues - nausea and diarhea, but nothing severe and I was tolerating great after that. After 10 days, upped my dose to 2000 mg once a day as per Dr.'s orders. Coincidentally, I also started taking a fiber supplement at night with the Met because I was feeling a little "irregular". I felt pretty good except for some mild indigestion. 7 days after beginning the 2000mg dose I did NOT take the fiber supplement with Met that night. I woke up around 4 a.m. feeling HORRIBLE. Nauseous, stomach was killing me, horrible acid indigestion. Threw up the most acidic and painful mess several times. Finally just writhed in the bed until things subsided and I fell back asleep.

I've now split my dose up to 1000mg 2xday (an option my Dr. gave me if I was having trouble with the side effectsl) and I'm also taking the fiber pills at night again. No more repeats of that horrible morning.

I've definitely been watching what I eat and stearing clear of anything "acidic" but I'm still dealing with a little bit of acid indigestion.

Has anyone else had this side effect while on Met? Have you found it got better as your body got used to the Met? Do you take Prilosec or another acid reducer regularly?

About a month after I started taking Metformin, I started getting really bad heartburn. The pharmacist told me to always take it after a meal, but that did not always work. Luckily, after about a month of bad heartburn, it just went away.
