I was diagnosed with PCOS in August and have been taking Met for about 6 weeks now. I have received a lot of great information from reading these discussions, so thank you. But I do still have a few questions:
1. I am a thin cyster, does diet an exercise help with PCOS symptoms if you do not have to lose weight?
2. If the met is controlling your hormones, does the PCOS symptoms go away when your body is regulated or at least get better?
3. I have experienced some hair loss over the past 2-3 years but it is mostly in the back and on the right side. It is not on the top of the head like male pattern baldness. Before I knew I had PCOS my dermatologist said it was from dandruff and controlling the dandruff would help. Has anyone else had just hair loss in general? And does it ever grow back if you regulate the PCOS?
Thanks

I am also a thin cyster and I can say yes, that altering your diet and exercise can help significantly with PCOS symptoms, especially if you are having hypoglycemic symptoms. I was directed to eat similar to a diabetic diet, spreading your carbs evenly throughout the day and it really helped with the jittery, crankiness I always had around meal times. Exercise also helps...forget why right now...but I think it helps to regulate the hormones and in general helps anyone feel better, PCOS or not.

Yes, typically once the IR is regulated, you will see a decrease in your sumptoms. It may take a while - up to 6 months for some. Many people see their cycles return earlier though.

My hair has been thinning for years. It actually started to thin quite a bit more (male pattern baldness area) after I started Met. The hair loss that I experienced with the Met has started to grow back. The docs stated that it was just typical hairloss and not due to the Met (I disagree!).

I believe (as clinical data suggests) that many things are correlated to the highest tolerable level of Metformin (faster hair growth - more weight loss, etc). I've been on it for 7 weeks (4 weeks at 2000 mg.) and in that 7 weeks (started at 1000 - then 1500 - then 2000 - soon to be 2500) my hair has gotten so much thicker - like it use to be - I've lost 10 lbs and my energy is higher than it's been in 4 or 5 years - I feel great -
