I have been on and off met for the last 5 years, I mainly stop taking the medication because of the diarrhea side effect. I have taken it long enough each time to the point were the doctors say okay this should be going away any day now, it never does. I have been on it for months and months at a time and still nothing less then an explosion each time I have to use the bathroom, sometimes Im affraid I wont even make it there. Turns out my mother and Grandmother were on the metformin and had the same horrible problem (they were on it for being diabetic and was changed from that medication to another one that worked better for them) I really want to fix this problem but can not deal with this horrible side effect any longer. My current doctor claims that there is no other medication that can help me out. So my question is this, Is there anyone out there that has PCOS and Insulin resistance that is on something other then Metformin or Glucophage?

JLR - you might want to try Cinnamon. It does the same job as Met, but does NOT have the same s/e!!! In fact, Cinnamon has been traditionally used to treat digestive disorders.

You can get it at a health food store, in 500 mg capsules. Dosage ranges from 1000 mg/day to 4500 mg/day.

Good luck! HTH!! 8)

My endo just prescribed Actos for me. I had an allergic reaction to Met. I have not started it yet.

You might also want to look into Avandia.
