After switching to a higher dose extended release Metformin, one night I became seriously ill. I had extreme upper GI pain in the late afternoon, and began vomiting about 9PM one evening. I continued vomiting every 5-10 minutes for the next 15 hours, and I one point considered going to the emergency room. It was by far the sickest I have ever been in my life (beyond any food poisoning I've experienced).
I contacted both my GP and Endo. Endo said the medication could be making symptoms worse, but both doctors agreed it sounded like food poisoning or a virus. After about 15 hours, the vomiting ceased, and I was completely back up to speed after I caught up on some rest.
I wrote it off to Food Poisoning or illness.
However, just a few days ago, almost exactly one month later (to the day), the same thing happened. Late afternoon upper GI pain, followed by 15 hours of EXTREME upper GI pain and continuous vomiting. My GP wanted to see me immediately, and now seems to think I am having some extreme reaction to the Metformin. I am seeing my endo today, and am curious to see if he will concur.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this extreme/short lived illness on Metformin/Glucophage? Does anyone have any insight? I have had some continuing gastrointestinal issues with Metformin, even the extenended release, so I am wondering if I am really having just a horrible reaction to it.
Thank...
