Hello Everyone,

I am new to the board and I was wondering if someone could help me with some information on Metformin...I have PCOS and kidney disease. My doctor has put me on Metformin 1500 mg a day, but I was told to start on it slowly. I also have a Kidney Disease which I have had since birth. Now my question is with my Kidney Disease should I take Metformin? I am very nervous about taking it with worrying about that big warning they give you about Lactic acidosis...I am scarred to death because it can become very deadly. So can anyone give me some helpful advise?

if you have kidney disease, talk to your nephrologist ASAP. Not to scare you, but that doctor will be in the best position to determine if met is a good option for you. Although I trust my RE implicitly, if I had kidney disease, I'd let my kidney doctor make the decison about met, as would my RE.

I tried taking Metformin and it didn't help me. Right now I'm on Actos and I have to get bloodwork every couple of months because it can cause liver problems. Actos is a lot like Metformin. But, definitely check with your kidney doc ASAP!!!

Have you talked to your RE about using Cinnamon instead? I believe it is much gentler on kidneys and liver (and guts!) than Met, but it does the same job.

If you decide to take it along with your Met, be cautious, because it can really pull your blood sugar down! I'm hypoglycemic, and I needed to reduce the amount I was taking because it brought my blood sugar down too much. I'm feeling better now, and I think it's going to work really well for me. (I just got it on Sat., and was taking 2000 mg/day, now I'm taking 1000 mg/day for the first week, then upping it to 1500 mg/day for another week, then up to 2000 mg again.)

I got mine in capsule form from WAL MART - its great. I take one a day. My dose is 500 mg. I noticed that I have not had to adjust my insulin (I am a type 2 diabetic now) and I stay a bit more even.

I am not on Met.

Hope that helps!
