Sorry, I have never used Vaniqa either, but I'm also very curious as to other people's experiences. Here is the manufacturer's website.

Sounds like the jist of it is that you apply it twice daily (once in the AM and once in the PM) before any lotion or makeup. It takes about 8 weeks before you really notice a difference, when the hair follicles slow down significantly. It does not prevent hair growth, only slows it. So you'd still need to do your hair-regimen, just not as often. Once you stop using it, the hair will begin to grow at normal pace. Looks like a small percentage of women experience skin irriation from it (PCOSA Ladies, has this happened to you?), and it is unknown whether it is safe to take during pregnancy/breastfeeding.
One thing I have heard is that many insurances don't pay for it. :(
My only advice for hisutism-control include the usual combination of bleaching, tweezing, shaving, waxing. and trimming...Hey, I just described the first 1/2 hour of my day (LOL)! There is also the option of anti-androgen medication (in the birth control pill Yasmin, or in spironolactone, which is not a birth control method), which prevents the interaction of androgens at the skin's surface. This can be very helpful, but as with everything there can also be side effects, so you'd want to talk to your doctor about that, too.
I'd definitely like to hear if/how Vaniqa has worked for women in the real world, and if people recommend it. :)
Thanks for bringing up a great question!

Vaniqa slows hair growth. It does not make the dark hair go away. Vaniqa may cause ingrown hairs at first. I used it for about a year. I started it at the same time as Met, and I did see my tweezing time cut in half on a daily basis (from about 10 minutes to 5). I stopped using it when my prescription ran out because I decided to invest in laser hair removal.

I would suggest you get your meds stabalized before you start laser. I was on Met over a year before I looked into laser. They were very familiar with PCOS and said I would have permanent hair reduction, but if my hormones weren't under control, more hair would appear.
I've never had a problem with mood swings, but I was suddenly losing hair at my temples. I can't say if it was Met or Vaniqa that helped the facial hair, but I'm sure it was Met that caused the hair come back at my temples, got rid of my excessively oily skin, made my pores smaller and allowed me to lose 30 pounds. I never had any bad stomach problems with Met. I was a little nauseated for about a week after I increased my dosage to 1000mg, and I had food aversion (didn't want to eat much of anything - especially meat) for about 4 months. I was hungry all the time before Met, and now I'm only hungry when I'm supposed to be hungry.

I have been on Met for 2 yrs starting out at 1000mg but then doc raised to 2000mg a day(1000mg twice a day). I do feel better, and I do find that its easier for me to lose weight on Met. However, sometimes I forget to take my second dose and I end up only getting 1000mg that day. The past month I have been more strict in remembering to take the second dose and I think I might get my period finally after over 8 months. I can feel slight pain in my pelvic area that usually happens about a few days before I get a period...I think its the cysts dissolving or something.
I thought that when I first started taking Met that it would make me lose a lot of weight...it won't do it by itself...you have to exercise and eat right. Its not a miracle drug, it only helps you when you help yourself.
Good luck!

I used Vaniqua for several months back in 2001. To be honest, I didn't notice any difference in the hair growth rate. My insurance didn't cover it, so I decided it wasn't worth the expense.
I would be careful with Vaniqua, my insurance did not cover it, so I bit the bullet and paid full price. I used it for two months. That is not long enough to tell whether it would have an effect on the hair, but it really did a number on my skin. First very dry and then almost like it burned it. My skin was just too sensitive for it. Now I have always known that I have sensitive skin, so I was prepared for this to happen. I would say if you have sensitive skin, it is not worth the money.

The cream is something which is very worthwhile using if you can get it. The results do depend on each individual woman but I've found the results to be fantabulous!
