I was wondering if Provera makes you ovulate, or just make AF arrive. I have a prescription at home since I don't ever get AF. The week I was suppose to start taking it, she showed up! I am on 1500mg of Met, and should have gotten AF again this week. No sign though. I thought I would give it another few days, maybe take Provera, and TTC off of that? Does that seem pretty far fetched? I feel like a desperado to even think about doing it. Any input would help. Thanks! Shelly :(

Provera is synthetic progesterone. Progesterone is the hormone that is typically produced after you ovulate. Once the egg is release, the remaining follicle turns into a corpus luteum and starts to produce progesterone to help support a pg should it occur. If you aren't Oing, or don't have a "good" O, you will have low progesterone levels and thus AF will not show. Provera is taken during your "LP" to help induce AF. It is not an ovulation inducer. The Met may be helping your cycles to regulate if AF showed up on her own without having to induce last month. Do you know how long that cycle was? Not everyone has a 28 day cycle, so you may want to wait until CD 35 to start your PRovera,...give your body a chance to work on it's own. Charting your BBT and CM is a good way to know if you O'd that cycle and typically you would expect AF approximately 14 days later. fertilityfriend.com has lots of info or the book Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Wechsler is a great resource to learn about your body and cycles.

I asked my dr. this same question, and she said that it only causes you to shed your uterine lining. However, she didn't want to prescribe it to me because it has been linked with some pretty serious birth defects. So...you might want to do some research on it before TTC.

Thanks for your input. I am just so so so frustrated. What is the longest amount of time you guys have had to wait for AF to arrive again between cycles? I feel so overwhelmed with everything that has been going on with my body, and it's lack of wanting to work properly. I want to scream, and pull my hair out sometimes. I am just in one of those moods. I want answers now, I want results now, I want everything NOW. My Doc said....."you're only 28, you have plenty of time to try different treatments." She doesn't know how I feel inside. The need that consumes every minute of my day. UGH!!!!!! (really sorry for this rant)

Some of my longest cycles were 40 days. But there are women on the boards who have gone much longer. You want to have AF at least every 3 months. Obviously if you are TTC, you would want to induce her long before that so you have more chances of Oing and a BFP. I agree with ald2116, prometrium or micronized progesterone is a better option when you are TTC to induce AF. It is safer if you would happen to be pg without knowing.

How long have you been TTC? For some it is a longer road than for others and requires a lot of patience. Which is draining and frustrating!! Some women it takes up to 6 months for Met to regulate their cycles. Some women need more than just Met. It's often a waiting game to see what works. If Met alone doesn't do the trick, there are many more options out there for you!! Best Wishes!
