I have been taking met for well over a year and recently increased the dose to 2500. I had nearly given up hope of ever getting a period without Provera then wow - out of the blue a period! However, that was 11 days and there is little sign of it getting any lighter.
I have been taking Provera for many years every 3-6 months and my periods last about 6 days.
My question is whether anyone else has experienced an exceptionally long period once the met kicked in.
Thanks for your imput!
I see that you wrote this on May 18th, so hopefully by now (May 24th) you have either stopped bleeding or seen your doctor about it.
My experience with super-long periods has not been related to just beginning Metformin. But while already taking the Metformin, I have had some pretty long periods (sometimes 4 - 5 weeks of various degrees of spotting-bleeding). My doctor has told me that it can be related to low progesterone...what you want is a clear spike and drop in progesterone levels. If you just have this sort of steady low supply, then your lining may choose to either not shed at all (no period), or continuously shed (long "period"). If this is the case with you, you might want to consider testing your progesterone levels and checking if taking progesterone or BCP's might be an answer. Or, if you're trying to get pregnant, maybe Clomid?
Other ideas include maybe your lining was extra thick after a long time with no period? Though, still, 11(+) days seems awfully long!
Is there the possibiliy of a burst cyst or a miscarriage? (NOT to jump to the most negative of conclusions, of course, just trying to brainstorm possibilities).
I sure hope you're feeling better now!!! :)
Take Care,
Tish

I appreciate the comments about long bleeding and possible progesterone cause. My problem both before I knew I had PCOS and after is that I generally bleed way too much, often 10 days with lots of sudden gushing, nothing like the nice 5 day gradually increasing & then decreasing cycle that appears on boxes of tampons. Even on BC some years ago, I started having two periods a month sometimes. After being off BC for several years, and in hopes of reducing all this bleeding, I recently went back on a new pill for me, Yasmin, per doctor's advice, and not only has the bleeding time not lessened, but last month I had bleeding over 3 weeks, so only one week period free out of the whole month! I am so tired of this, and I have asked doctors about trying progesterone before, so I'm definitely going to be asking about this again at my next visit.
