My understanding with PCOS is that if you treat the underlying causes, you can have a fairly good chance of conceiving, it just may take longer and require additional interventions. But don't give up hope thinking that you will become a parent...it is still possible! My suggestion is to treat the PCOS now and you will have a better chance at conceiving when you are ready to become a parent. Not that I'm advocating to wait until your 30's (although I did and still got a BFP), but don't rush things because you think it won't happen. I think that the 25% figure given by your doctor may be an extremely conservative estimate. My doc said with treatments that I would have almost an 80% chance of conceiving...almost the same as a fertile woman. (and I have endometriosis as well as PCOS)

Good Luck with your decision.

I was also diagnosed at 18 and told that chances were very slim. I was started on metformin to help my insulin resistance and was told to watch my diet and exercise. I'm now almost 22 (next month!) and got pregnant after 7 months of trying and one miscarriage - I had no fertility treatments other than the above mentioned metformin for the insulin resistance.

SO, doctors can be a little off in their hurry to tell you you'll never conceive. I agree with Wildflower that you should concentrate on treating your PCOS and not rush things. Start trying when you really WANT to, not because you think you'll have to :). You will be much happier for it!

Hope this helps!

Many women with PCOS have fertility issues, but as Insulin Resistance is the main cause of PCOS for most of us, if you treat the IR, your fertility rebounds, and you have almost as good a chance as everyone else!! (See the FAQ's sticky!!)

I was a young mom (had my son when I was 19), and while I love him to death, and DO NOT regret having him, I caused hardships for the both of us I could have avoided if I had've waited until I was at least reasonable secure before getting pregnant. He's 14 1/2 now, and while his father turned out to be the man of my nightmares, not the man of my dreams, I now have a DH who IS wonderful, and is amazing with my son!!!

So, don't count yourself out yet!! 8)
