I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS and was put on Met and Yasmin. I am 21 years old and am having a hard time coping with the side effects of the medication.

I have been taking Met for about 3 months @ 1500mgs per day. I always take it with a meal and usually feel relatively ok afterward.

If I eat lettuce (or any simiar veggie...like cabbage) and take the Met, I get extremely ill...

Has anyone else experienced this or know of anyone who has?

For those of you taking Met, what do you usually eat when you take it to make sure you don't feel ill afterward?

Thanks so much! :D

Yes! I had this problem when I started Met. I love my salads but every time I would eat lettuce I would get sick and (excuse me if it's too much information but) I would burp up this nasty lettuce/stomach acid taste for hours. Good news is that this only lasted a few months and now I do not have any problems.

As far as what to eat, it's different for everyone. Everyone with PCOS should keep away from the refined simple carbs of course. Whole grains, fresh fruit (no fruit juice), lean meat, eggs, cheese and vegetables (no potato or corn) were good for me. Sugar, starchy or greasy foods, especially foods with butter or margarine, would make me very sick.

I don't have a problem with lettuce, which is good because I too love salads, but if I eat a plateful of pasta, the tummy cramps and rumbles get really bad. A small amount of past seems to be okay, and any other kind of carb seems to be okay as well. I don't know why pasta in large amounts is the only thing that bothers me, but I guess I should count my blessings.

Thanks for the input!

I am slightly confused though. I tend to feel better when I take my Met with some sort of carb. Is that strange?

What makes my situation even more complicated is that I am vegetarian, so it is really hard to have a low-carb diet.

Are there any good PCOS diet books out there?

Thanks! :D

I'm still a fan of a little glass of milk with met. itake mine that way and never seem to have any side effects/issues.

I have also found that the milk thing works to take it. A few times, when we have been eating out, I haven't taken my pills with me, but can take them when I get home with a glass of milk. Luckily, since I started taking met, I have not had any particular food cause me problems. Good Luck!

One thing to note about iceberg lettuce... it really is just filler, and has very little nutritional value.. in our house we also have issues with Irritable Bowel Syndrome and ulcers etc. Lettuce tends to help grab whatever is in your intestines and take it with it on the way through... Try other kinds of leafy greens.. like spinach leafs or other kinds of lettuce other than iceberg.. I know when eating out that it can be difficult to avoid iceberg lettuce...

Kiki.. who wants everyone to know that being diabetic at 31 really isn't that great.

Lettuce is great, but even romaine and more nutritional salads are not enough on their own to sustain metformin's powerful effects.

What I do is either add some meat and cheese to my salads, or if I want a plain salad than I just have a peanut butter sandwich with it. Having protein is the key because that is what metformin is supposed to process, fats, proteins and sugars, not veggies.

Try this at all your meals and hopefully it will work!
