hey--

i was just wondering if anyone has successfully dealt with reflux... the doctor thinks that ty has it and prescibed zantac. i know ty spits up a ton, and he coughs a lot... so i agree... however the zantac is beyond gross...is like 7.6% alcohol... and tyler will not take it and quite frankly i don't want him to have it... but i do realize that he needs this reflux to be in control. he's been miserable lately, and i think it because of this...

help... does anyone have any advice or use something other than zantac????????

Leata had reflux and ended up in the hospital at 6 months old because she stopped breathing because she was choking because of the reflux. They gave her prevacid which was in the form of a pill that dissolves in her mouth and it worked wonders.

thanks sarah, my doctor finally called back and he switched him to prevacid... he choked pretty bad today, and i was feeling nervous. i put a wedge in his crib and have started some rice cereal before breastfeeding. i'm also going to start thicking feeds. it's so funny, i was determined to wait until at least 5 months to start feeding any solids... oh well!!!

hey-- congratulations by the way-- when do you get your next set of numbers... i'm so excited for you!!!

Tiera- I hope the prevacid works well for you guys. It really worked wonders for us.

I don't know when I will get my next set of numbers. I was hoping today but obviously not. Hopefully tomorrow. I think I am supposed to go in for a bp check tomorrow anyway so I may ask then and hope they are back.

Emma has reflux too. Her surgeon (for her pyloric stenosis) gave her Reglan. It's helped some. I try to not give it to her unless absolutely necessary. She's a spit up monster! It doesn't seem to bother her unless she coughs or chokes because of it, but that isn't too often or severe.

Ok, forgive me. i have no brain left and it's nearly 4am and I'm still awake with heartburn that won't quit.

DS had terrible reflux. It was like ther sphincter that keeps food down didn't develop until he was nearly 8 months old. Urp everywhere, all the time. He didn't seem to upset by it though: better out than in, I suppose. He was on something, but I can't even remember what. Really didn't help much. A Baby Motrin dropper full of liquid Maalox worked wonders, though - you could see the relief from the burning going down his throat.

Heavier foods havn't been shown to help much, so don't feel like you have to push cereal, especially if you are nursing and not ready to give it up or lessen it. ANd if it doesn't help the urping or the crying then try to know it's nothing you have or havn't done correctly.

Besically they have to outgrow it. I know that's not what you want to hear. There is nothing worse than hearing your own child in distress. I really wish I had a magic cure to offer, but I don't yet!

My doctor said every baby has a touch of reflux. Honestly, the rice cereal has been shown not to help with reflux. I'd be wary of introducing solids so early - there are studies that show if your baby has solids before 6months they are at risk for food allergies. They say breast or formula only for the first 6 months. Definately DO NOT put rice cereal in a bottle (some peds still advise this  ) since it is a choking hazard. If you feel inclined to give cereal - give it watered down via spoon. My sisters daughter had very bad reflux and she put her on rice thickening formula - it thickens in the belly. But she wasn't BF so that doesn't help you. It helped a bit. I think your best bet is prevacid and the wedge. Good Luck I can imagine how scary this is for you! *hugs*

Tiera - see if you can send Kirsten a pm. She's not on the boards much anymore, but I think her ds had it pretty bad. Maybe she can help.

I work in a pharmacy that also compounds (that's actually what I do). A LOT of kiddos won't take the Zantac b/c of taste. If you can find a pharmacy that compounds they can actually crush the Zantac tablets, make it into a suspension & flavor it for you to something that tastes better. We usually use a tutti-frutti flavor for Zantac but bubble gum & grape are popular also. Someone also mentioned the dissolving Prevacid - they also make Prevacid that comes in little powder packets that you just add to liquid. Hope that helps!!
