Ugh. I'm very frustrated. My doctor just put me on Fortamet. Up until now, I have only been on BCP and a bit of Spirnolactone (stopping the spirnolactone, as I can't stand being on too much at one time).

Anyway, the doctor said that I have to do South Beach and drink lots of water and take the Fortamet. For the first week, I followed it to the letter and gained two pounds. WHY WHY WHY!? (a little side effect from South Beach breakfast, Phase I - I now never want to see an egg again! boring)

Then I started to bleed a few carbs in because I seriously had no energy, but still much less food that I had usually eaten in the past, and managed to gain another two pounds. Work clothes are not fitting and I am freaking out.

Anyone have any insight??? I'd be so appreciative. Everything I read says the opposite, and I can't understand what I'm doing wrong!!! :x

(I don't have high blood sugar, at least not yet - Dr. put me on the meds solely for PCOS maintenance).

When I first started Met I gianed My Dr. said to me "your the only person I have seen GAIN weight on met....thanks a lot, I don't see her any more. I think I gained weight because of the nausea side effect. I would eat more after I took the met because I would start feeling nausea and the nausea would subside. try taking the met just befor you start eating a meal. that has helped me.

Hi! I tried met for 3 months and just got off it 3 weeks ago (for my pcos and to regulate my period). S/E of my using met are gas and diarrhea.I didn't lose any weight either. I felt that my blouses didn't fit at all!.

I think joeysmommy is right. I had to nibble most of the time to stave off gas brought about by met. And I think met made my stomach bloat (like I was 3 months preggy!) because when I got off met, my stomach shrunk back to its regular size.

Met- 1000 g/day for 3 mos
weight- 178 lbs.
before met- 177 lbs.
height- 5'3"
Lbs to lose: Ideal- 50; realistic- 20

Hi, my name is Courtney. I have both P.C.O.S. and diabetes.
I was origonally on Metforman but I just couldn't keep taking it with the horrible stomach aches that came with it. I couldn't even take it during the day anymore knowing it would make me sick. Now I'm on the name brand of Metforman called Fortamet (Fortamet is known for being les harsh on the stomach). I actually do lose weight taking this medication, but my guess is that it's because my stomach stays upset. I have been taking it now for almost a year. And my best reccommendation for anyone out there taking is and having stomach problems (nausia, stomach cramping, gas) is to sandwich it in a meal. Take it right in the middle of a meal! It seems to work effectively for me. :)
