Hello, my name is Karen and I am a food-a-holic.

Although I eat natural and organic foods I have lost portion control pcos is out of control ever since we got kids. I have heard moms say kids make you fat but I thought they just wanted a cheap excuse.

I have found the best way to lose weight is to hang around someone sick so you get it and then you dont want to eat and you lose weight.

I need Lisamaries drive to exercise, it just seems like I have so little time as it is right now I would have to take away from sleep to do it.

lisamarie

I do take away from sleep to do it and tv time. hehehe and hubby time.

When I work out I take away hubby time, sleep time, computer time. It is worth it - I just won't take baby time since I work and only get the little bit with him. I have been losing weight/dieting since I can remember. It really is something you have to commit to or it wont work.

I need to come back and post my points from yesterday. :?

Good Job Mara!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y267/lisamw/cheerleader.gif

Im really thinkin about just counting points instead of worrying about Calories. I cant keep up with eating the total that Im supposed to have plus I go over on the pts. I think the points will suit me better. So gonna go by points for a week and see hwo that goes instead.

My neighbor made me el salvadorean food today (its part of a deal for me to watch her 14 month old for 2 hrs a day) but my "baby bird" helped me eat it, I was right there practicing asking "more please" and opening wide. Fried eggs with tomato and onions, you put it on homemade tortillias with ricotta cheese. So I ate much less cause he eats alot and it was a single portion, I am going to have to use his mooching as a diet thing more often.

Ok, I'm going to try to join you guys this month, although December is probably not a good month to diet. Mmmmmm....fudge!! :D At last check, I had lost all of my pregnancy weight plus 2 pounds (for a total of 31). My goal is to get back to at LEAST my weight when DH & I got married - which means I have about 70 lbs to go. UGH!! I figured that might be an easier goal than trying to get back to pre-married weight - that would give me about 100 lbs to lose & that seems a little over the top for me right now.

lisamarie- how did you get so many tickers on your signature? I wanted to put a weight loss one up but it says "your signature is too long". :x

I feel so good. I have eaten well today and I went to dh's work and did the elliptical for 30 min and the treadmill for 15. I am going to try and go at least 3 times a week and use my bike on a coupld of the days that I don't. I really like the equipment and they have a projector set up so that I can watch a movie on a big screen while exercising. It totally takes me away from thinking about the fact that I am exercising excpet for when I do weights. I also went to a great health food store here that has the cheapest produce in town. They get it locally and while most of it os not certified organic a lot of it would qualify but because it is not certified. I got green peppers for $.25 each and limes were 12 for a dollar. I got a huge pomagranite for $.89. I got apples for $.29 a pound. I got one of those individual sized watermelon (the ones that feed a family) for $1.50. I don't know how those prices compare to other places but they are cheap here. I am excited to get going on eating well and working out!

That's great, Sarah!!!! I know what you mean about feeling elated over finding the "little things" that make it easier to eat right. I bought a $4 microwave egg poacher the other day and since I know I'd be better off eating protein-heavy breakfasts but hate cooking in the am, I'm over the moon about it! Hey, every little thing helps...and yes, those prices are mind-boggling, so take advantage while you can!

Umm...I know this sounds stupid..but how do you steam veggies? Are they fresh and you steam them? Or are they frozen and you steam them? lol See how unhealthy I am??? lol

You can steam veggies (fresh) in the microwave in a covered dish but it can be hard to get them just right, at least with my older microwave. My mil has a "cook fresh veggies" button on her new microwave and it's a lot better. Err on the side of checking them sooner than later unless you don't mind them a little soft. But if they get too soft, you've lost a lot of the vitamin benefits. Steaming is about getting them soft enough to eat but not cooking them to death. Frozen veggies are already par-boiled so you're basically just heating them. I do all my frozen veggies in the microwave -- just follow directions on the bag but usually cut 30secs off the time cause I like them crisp too. In fact when we have frozen peas with homemade mac and cheese my boys love the peas partly frozen, then they mix them in with the hot stuff. Yuuummmy!

I usually do it the old-fashioned way on the stove cause I like my steamed veggies really crisp so I like to keep a close eye on em. Buy a stainless steel steamer basket for less $5 at the grocery store or wherever. When you buy it it's closed in the package. When you open it up it fits into all my med-size saucepans -- pretty much one size fits all -- it doesn't matter if it doesn't go flat on the bottom of the saucepan when it's all opened up. Put a little bit of water in the bottom of the pan (so there's enough to keep the pan from burning, but not enough that it rises over the bottom of the steamer basket). Then put your washed (still a little wet) veggies in the basket, put a close-fitting lid on top, put your burner on high and keep a close eye out. Fresh spinach usually takes less than 5 mins. and broccoli takes 7-8, things like zucchini or summer squash about 5-6, snow peas are done in a flash -- like 2 mins. It's trial and error in the beginning but you can't really mess up -- your veggies might just be crisper or softer than you would like.

I usually put veggies on to steam when I take a casserole out of the oven. In the time it takes to cool down the veggies are done. If I'm broiling meat or something I do them in the last few mins. and everything is done at the same time. Good luck Lisa!!!!!!! HTH

They also sell counter top steamers for veggies and rice. THey are not that expensive and easy to use. Also they tend to keep more nutrients in supposedly than using the stove method. I know some frozen food company also has freeze and steam packages. Frozen is always the better choice over canned with fresh and steamed being the best.

I have a stove top steamer, looks like a sauce pan with a contraption on top to put your veggies. I love steamed veggies, and I use either fresh or frozen, but never canned. We dont eat canned veggies or fruit, too much added crap...preservatives and so forth...

i love steamed asparagus....sooooooooooooooo good...

elsie
12-02-2006, 02:54 PM
Oooh, asparagus! I miss it since we only usually eat it in season. We grow it right in the backyard and that is one of the few veggies I prefer blanched. I throw the spears in salted boiling water for 3-4 mins. then run under cold water while I'm draining them, then put lemon juice on them. I love the way they look bright green that way too. Only downside is that it's not hot that way. With some salmon or lemon chicken ... I'll gladly go to heaven that night.

I also love green beans blanched that way and I take them to potlucks during the winter cause so people always love the bright green color in the middle of snow season. I blanch them and then saute with garlic and Indian brown mustard seeds (no I'm not one of those creative chefs -- recipe is from a cookbook). Super yummy! Can you tell food is on my mind today??! Must be cause I'm getting a cold and have no appetite but am still hungry, if that makes any sense.

Making filet mignon tonight with spinach and roasted sweet potatoes. My dad picked up a huge beef tenderloin, froze it, and sent all the TGiving guests home with a portion of it. So tonight we eat like royalty! I'm thinking about adding some horseradish to the filets but don't want to ruin em. But that way at least I'll be able to taste what I take the trouble to cook :(

i took Haylie to the YMCA yesterday for the first time...it is so cool there (i've never been to one) and the best part (lisa you'll like this) the lady who runs the childcare center there is the daughter of Haylie's regular babysitter....so i feel much better knowing who she is staying with even though i know i am only a few doors down....Haylie was excited about swimming lessons which she wil start in Janurary (we are doing them without mommy cause she clings to me badly) i figure she will "perform" better for a stranger than for me...but i will be at the door watching (where she can't see me)

I am back after a small hiatus this weekend from the diet (i wasn't horrible but ate some bad stuff) trying to get my metabolism back into gear....i think it got too used to the 1200cals...so today i am back....i feel okay, and have done 10 mins on a treadmill at 10+ incline already for my stress test which actually made me feel pretty good, impoved my mood some today...i can't wait to go to the gym later and work off somemore frustration

will join lisa later in reporting what i ate and stuff today....maybei won't be so inclined to cheat with all of you looking at it

Elsie-Im just up to 45 min on cardio. Am I supposed to add my cool down time? If so..then its 5min of cool down on the treadmill..and 4 on the bike.
THen it takes about 20-25min of floor exercises.

I hope I do alright tonight with not feeling well.

I just talked to Jewels..shes into her size 10's. Im happy for her but she is starving herself. She BARELY eats 1000cals a day...most of the time she just eats 600. Frank keeps on her. Im trying to do it the right way..but it gets discourging when she is losing and fittinginto smaller clohtes. She said from she weighed today and lost 5.6 lbs. Thats from the start of this..she just now lost some weight. Im not goin to weigh till next tuesday and do my measurements then.

12-05-2006, 02:33 PM
600 cal a day???? That is crazy and super unhealthy. Wow.

My mom bought me a steamer at dollar general for like under 5 bucks. You might wanna check there.

I wanted to exercise today so bad.... but I am fighting a migraine. I am feeling better, but I know I can't exercise or it will just come back. Anyone else have the same problem??

Waitingfor1
12-05-2006, 02:47 PM
ahacker ~ I do, I had a migraine yesterday and I did not want to get on the treadmill because I was afraid of getting dizzy. I have a headache today, but not as bad as the migraine I had yesterday so I did 20 minutes on the treadmill today. This is my second time on it, so I'm trying to not stay too long on it.

Anyone else doing the South Beach Diet?

elsie
12-05-2006, 04:45 PM
Lisa == you are completely right about not comparing weight loss, esp. cause you're doing it in a way that will last. I never lost more than 2 pounds a week and sure I could've starved myself, but what's the point when you just gain it back?

I know how frustrating it is ... but your loss will come and will last.

Did you find a steamer gadget yet?

Aleida == I could never give up carbs completely but I am a good-carb-only convert.

I am so excited. I went to dh's work again today to workout. I did 20 minutes on the bike. I did 30 minutes on the treadmill on a programmed set that was crazier then I thought. I did that at about 4.5 speed. I didn't like doing that when it was at a 7.5 incline though! Crazy! Then I did the elliptical for 15 minutes and then some stuff on the crossbow for my arms. If I can keep doing this it will help me feel so much better. I just know it from the few times I have done it already!

LisaMarie - Jewels is destined to gain her weight back and she eventually will quit losing weight so fast like that and if she keeps working out like she is her body is going to think it's starving and instead of losing fat, she'll lose muscle. This coming from the weight loss queen - I know, been there, done that. the only time weight has ever STAYED off me was when I did it the right way - like you are.

okay so i am SOO back on the gym wagon...i went to YMCA today with Haylie and we did swim time and then she went to the child care center and did her homework while i went and met with a trainer who set up all the machines to what i should be doing....this was so cool, the friggin machine coutns for you and has a meter to tell you when to stop lifting and how far to go back down before starting again....i love it...she started me off with decent weights to build strength (esp. my upper body and ABS) and then the machines for cardio...i love the variety and there are alot of people i know there (some quite snooty) most from the upper class area of DHs job as a cop...which means i have to play nice mostly...but that's okay i will be working too hard to worry about it....

okay here was today:
I did 1 Rep of 10 on all the weight machines (arms, legs, back, abs, legs) just to get a feel for them but i still got a decent work out...and then i did 5 mins on each (treadmill, elliptical, bike, and some kind of cross between a stair stepper and an elliptical) i will of course do more next time but i had to orient on all machines....and of course my food intake below:

Breakfast
B+ Egg, Whole - Cooked, Fried 92g 185cals
C Pork Sausage, Fresh, Cooked 27g 92cals
B Deli style Ham Smoked - Cold Cuts 31g 23cals
A Mushrooms - Canned, Drained Solids 40g 10cals
International Delight Hazelnut (1 tablespoon) 30 cals
Dinner
D+ Tater Tots, regular size - Sides 84g 220 cals
B+ TJ's Beefaroni 228g 485 cals
Snacks
C+ Peanut Butter Cups Sugar-Free 18g 90 cals
A- Grapes (25) 40 cals
Total Calories Consumed 1,174

the tater tots were a bad choice but i wass kinda trying to clean out the fridge of leftovers (hence the beefaroni) the cals are correct on the beefaroni though i used an on-line recipie analyzer that you enter all your ingredients into and how many servings your splitting it into, and it gives you the serving size and nutrition facts...

Ok...gonna get this off my chest first ..then will post my intake for today.

So we worked out tonight. Recently we have been doin half treadmill and half biek for our cardio. Frank told us we could do that weeks back. So we started to. Then tongiht I asked him to show us another exercise so we can swithc it up. He did. Then in the midst of our conversation he is askin how everything eles is goin and what not. He then tells us we should NOT switch our cardio doin half and half like we were. This is like the third or fourth time that he has said something different. It just rubbed me wrong.
Anyways...
THEN..Jewels...she is newly single and is losing weight and boy has her attitude changed! She totally fixes herself up to go workout..stalks herself in the mirror and acts like her sh!t dont stink. I can handle that...even though I complaining about it. But tonight! She acted as if I was holdin gher back! Mind you she weighs 150 and I am or damn near 300 lbs. I still pretty well keep up with her. She just rubbbbbbbbeed me the wrong way tonight. Oh well...whew I feel betteer getting that out...lol

Lisa == when it comes to good chocolate all bets (and diets) are off. My sil is from Switzerland so you can bet your a$$ that when she shows up with the good stuff, I'm all over it!!!!!!!

Sounds like one more sign that you and Jewels might not be a workout match made in heaven. You have made a HUGE change and kept it up for a month+ during the toughest time of the year! If she starts to be more of a hindrance than a help, don't be afraid to go it alone. We'll all be your cyber trainers/workout buddies!!!!

Frank .... needs to read up on his fitness knowledge. My gym tells us it's best to switch cardio, ideally do three diff. machines for twenty minutes each. Cross-training is the best way to avoid injuries and challenge diff. muscle groups. Sounds like he has no clue how to motivate.

You're doing great girl ... just remember that this is for you, not your trainer or your friend. Funny too cause I was just thinking how much I'd like a workout buddy. Now I'm happy that I only have to deal with little old me and my hang-ups!

The study I was in this fall proved that those of us with ir are unable to get fuel to our cells without exercise or an insulin sensitizer, and I'm pretty much the poster child ... sounds like you are too. Guess we're lucky to at least know what we have to do.

Good job Tj...

Ok..got a new scale. Gonna weigh in in the morning.

Had an ordeal at the gym tonight. Ugg..

Went in and got on the bike. First of all..Jewels was waaay late. I went in and got on the bike. There was this chick in there who knew Jewels and we started talking(shes fluffy too..hehe) She joined right when we did and asked how much I had lost..I told her only 3 lbs so far and she was shocked and said I needed to talk to Frank. SO Frank came in a second later and the first floggin thing he said was..."you need to get off that damn bike..it dont do anything for yuo..you need to be on the ellipitcal". OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I instantly got sh!tty and said.."you said we arent ready for that". So anyways...I got on that on level 2. He set it for 45 min. Uggg. IT KICKED MY AS$! I cannot believe I actually did 20 minutes straight! He said to keep it at 4.5 but I could only range form 3.5-4.2 I have NEVER sweated taht much in my entire life! Every single thing sweated on me. not to mention I was wearing a sweatshirt because he told us to. It was crazy. My face was beat red. Then after that is when Jewels showed up. SO she got on it and I got back on it for 11 min. Jewels could only do 13 min. I felt pretty good about htat. lol

So anyways...IM on the elliptical now. I did a total of 31 min. DId my ball twists. Did my leglifts (at home) and did 2 reps of 50 on my sit ups. Ok..there is .

Did good on food..kinda. Will start back up with posting that for sure tomorrow...

Tonya == you are too funny!

Lisa == look out, no turning back, you're in the big leagues now!!! Seriously -- I could do 2, that's 02, not 20, minutes on the elliptical when I started. I am impressed and that's no lie. You will burn more calories than you could've ever imagined. Don't worry, the weight will soon follow.

Oh, and definitely re-think the sweatshirt ... why'd he tell ya to wear that? There is nothing lady-like about me at the gym -- I have to mop up the floor around me and wring out my shirt. No, I'm not exaggerating either. Means you're working your a$$ off! Be proud of that sweat! I am so proud of you Lisa ... cause I remember how great it feels too.

Frank is the trainer you will love to hate when this exercise pays off in lost pounds!!! Just picture his face on the elliptical treads when the going gets tough!!!

Maybe he's pushing you so hard cause he wants to market you as his #1 success story and francise his gym on a national level -- like Curves. Of course if they interview you for the marketing campaign, you can say, "Not many people can say they lost weight *despite* their trainer, but that's exactly what you get at Frank's gyms!"

some info i thought ws interesting:

quote:

Fish Oil Benefits for PCOS
Women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) have a number of symptoms that can be partially allieviated by omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil.

Insulin resistance
Chronic inflammation
Higher risk of heart disease
High blood pressure
High blood fats (high triglycerides)
Higher risk of diabetes
Depression
Stress

quote:

The Evidence for Fish Oil
Insulin Resistance. Insulin resistance is a primary cause of PCOS. It's not established that fish oil can directly reduce insulin resistance. However, there is one study of 12 overweight men and women who had insulin resistance. They were given DHA (a component of fish oil) for 12 weeks. 70% of the participants showed a decrease in insulin resistance.(1) In rats, insulin resistance was reduced by substituting fish oil for vegetable and animal fats in their diet.(2)

Inflammation. Women with PCOS have a greater tendency toward inflammation than other women. There is also an association between insulin resistance and inflammation.(3) A primary value of fish oil is that is helps to reduce inflammation.(4)

Heart Disease. Among women, a higher consumption of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease.(5)

High blood pressure. Omega 3 oils may help to reduce hypertension.(6)

High Triglycerides. Many women with PCOS have high triglycerides, a blood fat that indicates insulin problems that could lead eventually to diabetes. Fish oil has been shown to consistently lower triglycerides.(7)

Diabetes Risk. Omega 3 oil can reduce the risk of diabetes by reducing triglycerides without impairing glucose tolerance.(8)

It improves the rate of glycogen storage and enhances insulin secretion from beta cells in the pancreas.(9,10) Both of these actions improve glucose and insulin control.

Depression. Decreased omega-3 fatty acid consumption correlates with increasing rates of depression.(11)

Stress. Chronic stress leads to overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol, which in turn increases insulin resistance. Fish oil blunts the "stress response".(12)

All in all, omega 3 oil is likely to be beneficial to women with PCOS and ovarian cysts.

Mara- That info about the fish oil is so interesting! I've been taking it all through my pregnancy and breastfeeding with Jack for the benefits to him. I had no idea it could help with PCOS too. Wonder if it has something to do with my periods being so regular after having him? I take cinnamon too but just consistantly for a couple of months. My periods are more regular now than they were when I was on Met before conceiving Jack. Actually they are more regular now than they have ever been.
