hello to everyone out there
im new to this board but sadly am not new to pcos :(
im a mum and need help regarding teens with pcos
im 37 and was diagnosed with pcos apx 10 years ago
i have all the usual symptoms ie excess hair, overweight, skin tags, insulin resisitance etc i also have endometriosis and hyperprolactinimia :(

anyway this post is not about me but our 13yr old daughter apx 6 months ago she was very poorly with what presented like a tummy bug vomitting diarohea tummy ache etc since then shes been really not herself shes lost over 2st in weight+continues to loose weight now i know this is not a symptom or sign of pcos but a lot of other things are ie she started her monthlies at age 11 first 6 months were fine then they went totally irregular she can have 2 in one month or miss a month or 2 at a time, they are extremley heavy+not normal(sorry to be so graphic)
:(
she too has excess hair on her upper lip, lower back arms etc
she is also getting extremley tierd and has no energy she is absaloutley washed out and is as pale as a ghost ,she craves sugary things sometimes and seems to have the same prob as me with lack of energy around food and periods mood swings we put down to teenage hormones (no offence to you teens out there)but she also has acne all over her face and back which seems to be round her cycle again we thought it was a teen thing at first
now were under the hospital with her+have a wonderful consultant he arranged an ultrasound whish showed her right ovary is enlarged but they couldnt see any cysts and couldnt really see most of pelvis but rest was ok he seems to think that it cant be pcos as she doesnt have cysts and with loosing the weight he said her cycle would become more regular if it was pcos ,but im sure at this age that cysts wouldnt neccessarily be present ?does anyone out there know if you can have pcos without cysts at this age?and as to the weight thing i dont know any advise greatly recived
hes done blood tests which were "essentially" normal but he wont commit to a definate normal he said the tetstorone is within normal range and on this basis he said he doenst think she has pcos
but all my blood tests came back essentially normal yet i have been diagnosed with pcos and def have it
the issue with weight loss is really worrying us as i know thats not a normal thing with pcos and he seems to be concentrating on that+ignoring the other sysmptoms
shes due a barium meal soon +poss an endoscope
in my heart i have a gut feeling its pcos ive gone through years of battling it and i can see the same things happening to her but how do i get a dr to belive me if the tests arent showing it up conclusivley he wont say she doesnt have it but he said he doenst think she does
hes talking of sending her to a phsycologist now which has really upset her as she thinks hes saying its all in her head but the physical symptoms are there +are showing
can anyone offer any advise please
i cant find much on teens with pcos and here in the uk the drs are not forth coming in helping or acknowledging it any teens who can offer help id be really greatfull too as she could use someone her own age to talk to about it
thanks so much
a desperate mum xxxx

I just took my daughter to the gyn doctor today. She took a look at her history (sounds just like your daughters) And then did a look at her body. I did not know that she had hair on her stomach (typical of pcos) And also hair on other parts of her body where she shouldn't.
Me personally, I would take your daughter to a different doctor. When making the appointment, ask if the doctor deals with patients with PCOS. It is starting to be more common so a lot of doctors are learning about it.
My daughter is going in on the 22nd and is having blood work done and then an ultrasound. I was diagnosed in 99 with PCOS.
Good luck!

I just gave advice to someone else with a 13 year old daughter that i hope helped, and ill give the same to you. Im 16, and just got diagnosed today and looked at on thanksgiving. ive done a lot of research on it before i even knew it exsisted, and likewise- i have the exact same symptoms as your daughter! I think she is SO lucky to have a worried mom like you, since my dad and stepmother decided to avoid my symptoms and act like they were not there. I had to sneak behind thier backs and go with my real mother to the doctor. sad huh? anyway- take her to a different one DEFINATLEY! I feel the same as her- that its all in my head and very depressed about everything with the physical side of it being so out there for everyone to see and worrying that i might not be able to have kids. your a wonderful mother to be so kind and thoughtful about her... hope this helps and she can talk to me whenever she likes! my screen name on AIM is "yess its sam" and email is ragdoll11790@yahoo.com. email is the best way to talk for me. i hope this helps and good luck!

My name is Laura and I was diagnosed about four years ago. Since then I have done so much research into PCOS and even written a leaflet on it. Just because she doesn't have cysts on her ovaries doesn't mean she doesn't have PCOS! Take her to a different doctor and if they say she doesn't have PCOS, then ask why and also ask if there's anything else she could have to explain why she's like this!
