yet another sleeping issue for Aiden...he is now almost crawling and has started this thing the past 2 nights where he is a maniac in his crib & rolls around & ends up face first into the crib rails and wakes up screaming. I don't have the bumpers in there b/c I was worried about them...he woke up every half hour last night b/c of this...do I put the bumpers back in? Is there a safety issue with this?

I dont know what to tell you. I still have Porkchops bumper in. I tuck the bumper way in between the mattress and crib. Its so snug I cant see how she could get her head under it.

I would tend to put the bumpers back in. If he's that active, I think it's very unlikely that he'd get caught up in them to the point of suffocation, especially if they're tight like Lisa said. Atleast give it a try maybe for one night!?! Bumping his poor head on a crib rail and waking up is no fun!!

Bumpers should be safe once the baby is old enough to roll over well because they should sense the need to move away from the bumper if it's pressed against their nose. But what I would do, personally, is buy one of those mesh bumpers that is breathable - they make them either the same height as regular bumpers or big enough to cover the crib rails completely. They sell them at Babies R Us and other baby stores.

Arianna's bumpers are still in. She's had bumpers since she was born (even in her cradle). Like others said just make sure they are snug. Also to be the safest they should be the ones that tie both at the top AND bottom of the bumper.

I think the mesh bumper is a great idea to try. I only took Piper's bumper out because she was trying to stand on it. I wish it was still in there--she sleeps with 4 pacis in her crib and they all usually end out on the floor..intentionally.

The mesh bumpers wont keep him from smacking his head. All they are good for is keeping body parts and pacifiers in the crib.
When Anthony started rolling we put the bumpers back in as he was smacking his head. Then one day I caught him standing on a bumper so we took them out. Then I added mesh bumpers to keep his pacifier in and keep his extremeties from wedging between the crib slats. Now the little stinker stands up and throws his pacifier over the crib edge. He will also lay in his crib placing his leg on top of the mesh bumper smushing it down. This way he can freely hang his feet out of the crib!

Mara, I didn't have a bumper for Sean until he was about 8 months old for the same reasons you didn't use one. I ended up getting one because he was smacking into the bars and also getting his hands and feet stuck outside the bars during the night! He would wake up frantic that a limb was trapped! I only used it for about 5-6 months until he was more coordinated and able to get himself untangeled.
Hope this is helpful!
