Does met help to lower testosterone levels? I am not IR or overweight, but can it help with acne and hirstruism?

i hope so!

i have the same issue -- my endo said it would help, and i have to admit that i HAVE seen studies online indicating that this is the case. I have also seen plenty of info circulating to the contrary (i.e. where a woman is not IR, met will NOT help w/excess test.).

For me, I think only time will tell -- I'm too early in my treatment to have any results, but will certainly report back if i do see any...

I sure hope so too! I'm not insulin resistant either but my testosterone levels are too high even with being on a birth control pill so i was put on met a couple weeks ago. my main problem is with acne, hair growth isn't too much of a problem. i was told by one endo that met will lower my testosterone levels...i have to have my testosterone checked in 2 months to see if it's working.

i was also put on spironolactone for my skin and was told this won't necessarily lower my testosterone, but it is supposed to block the testosterone from affecting my skin. however i feel really confused because i saw another endo for a second opinion and he said because i'm not insulin resistant, he didn't think met would help me. i'm going to give met and spiro a try and i guess time will tell when i have my testosterone checked again if met is lowering it.

Here's one person's answer: no.

Started on 1500mg met seven weeks ago. Saw endo this week and no change in testosterone levels. Still high.

Piner99--

you do realize that 7 weeks is a very short time to measure endocrine changes, right? It would be much more effective to have a baseline measurement of T levels (free T as well) and then check it again after 3, 6, and 9 months of met dosage.

Spiro wouldn't even measure a change until 6 months of consistent dosage; your endocrine system didn't get messed up overnight and it won't heal overnight, either. So if you give it some time, you might find better results with future tests. :)

Met only minimally lowered my testosterone levels. So, my RE prescribed a mild steroid to help lower it even more, dexamethasone. I haven't started it yet due to the stomach virus but will begin it this coming week.

Thanks for the thoughts. I plan to stick on met for six months to get the definitive answer on whether it will lower testosterone. You're right, it's a bit early to conclude that it will never work. Hopefully the 7-week marker doesn't mean much.

Met has lowered my Testosterone levels. It was 119 and for the last three years has measured between 19-22. One time it went up to 50, but my Endocrinologist said that can happen at different times in your cycle. It has helped all of my PCOS symptoms, except the hair loss. I saw a change after only two months on it, my testosterone went down to 40, I had a regular period and just started feeling good. Please give it time :-)
