I posted this at the end of the October thread...suggestions and info, please!!

Ok, so I want to lose the last of my preg-weight (about 10lbs), and maybe another 10-15 lbs that I was overweight before getting PG, so I'll join you ladies on a November weight loss thread, but I have a question: How do I go about dieting while I'm BF-ing? I want to make sure I'm getting enough cals for milk, but few enough to lose weight...how do you BF-ing mommies go about this?

elsie
11-01-2006, 07:42 PM
Holly I would say that if you weren't overweight before getting pg and you're exclusively bf, give it another month or so before you give any thought to out and out dieting (other than cutting out any junk). Plus think about doing some strength training, that will really help to "re-shape" things and jump start your metabolism b'c of increased muscle mass. A great strength routine is pilates -- the absolute best for the belly and will strengthen your back too, which will really take a hit over the next few months as your little sweetie gets heavier and will likely go through a phase where she wants to be carried all the time.

But restricting calories at this point in the game before your dd is eating real food throughout the day will likely only make you tired. When you're bfing the baby gets all the nutrients and the mom is left with the dregs :( But it's all worth it in the end! I bfed both my boys for 18 mos. apiece. Of course I was home full-time so I was able to do it. All hats off to the moms out there who work and still manage to bf. Now that deserves a round of applause!

Okay - first day of SB. I hope I can do this. I was so so sick of this phase I food last time! I say if I can do a week I am good - just to kick start the diet. I like WW core as I can have some grains in the day AND oatmeal. I need a carb for breakfast otherwise I am dying. Had ham and eggs this am and will have a nice big salad with some chicken at lunch. YUM!

Mara- Where do you get the info for the South Beach Diet? Did you buy a book? Did you sign up online? I am being so bad about eating way too many carbs and way too much junk food that I really need something that I can follow. The first time I did this I was able to cut back on carbs with out any specific plan but right now I have gained 7 pounds in the last couple of months and pretty soon my clothes aren't going to fit me anymore. I need something structured. I was just wondering how you go the info and how you like it? I would at least like to try the first phase to get me going...

Sarah, when i did SB, I bought the book from the bookstore for like $6. Gave menus for the two weeks of no carbs, menus for the two weeks of low carbs....pretty good....

i screwed up...I went and had chicken tenders, french fries, garlic bread and sweet tea....YIKES...

of course i am here too...this sucks i hate diets and the gym...but i have to admit it's working so far...15.5 lbs down...i probably won't loose anything this week cause we are eating out and i don't know how many times i will ge tto go to the gym while over there...but i will try at least the pool...anyway...just poking in to say hi and

1/2 lb los tthis past week...GOOD LUCK GIRLIES!!!

esarah
11-07-2006, 02:04 PM
Thanks Tracy. I think that I will probably get the book. If I have menus that I can stick to then I do pretty well.

We all screw up sometimes. I have been doing all sorts of stuff that I am not supposed to lately.

I am going to probably start with South Beach on Monday. Tomorrow is dh's birthday and then hopefully sometime this weekend I will get to see Buttercup and we will probably meet up at a restaurant. I think after that I will give South Beach a try and maybe after a month on South Beach I can stick to what I did before to lose weight. Or if I love South Beach maybe I will stick to it... I just need something to get me started though.

My weightloss goal is 46.5lbs! :( I am up 35 since pre-PG..the scary thing is I had lost so much weight after A I was only 15lbs away from pre-pg weight. I will have to add a ticker to my profile. :?

lisamarie
11-08-2006, 03:06 PM
Mara....I got down to 260 after I had Emma...when she turned 3mths I packed it on from there on out. In 5.5 mths I have gained...*gulp* 35-45 lbs. You do the math. It is insane. Im killing myself. That is why I HAVE to do this.

I wasnt sure if I told you guys. But Frank had us write down what we usualy eat in a typical week. He said it looked like I consumed anywhere from 3000-3500 calories a day. So he said he wants me to do 2500 calories for awhile till he tells me. He said it still is alot but he doesnt want me to throw my body into the 'starvation' mode. SO there ya go. IN a bit I will post a breakdown of the calories I have used AND how many points I have used.

At the end of each day (after dinner)...I will post what I have eaten all day. Maybe this way it can give some ideas of what to eat for others if interested. Which it would be kinda cool if someone else threw out ideas of what they have eaten.

Come on ladies...we can do this!!!!!!!!! :D

Our future's so bright..we gotta wear shades....lol 8)

Ok, you are all amazing, and you have me inspired! I'm going to TRY to exercise and eat well and see what happens. Today I had a salad, but I keep dipping into my coworker's candy dish with mini chocolates.

I've done WW before, and found its "Plan Essential for Nursing Mothers." http://www.weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?tabnum=1&art_id=31271 It says:

Your weight right now: Daily POINTS Target if you're breastfeeding:
Less than 150 pounds 30
150 to 174 pounds 32
175 to 199 pounds 34
200 to 224 pounds 36
225 to 249 pounds 38
250 to 274 pounds 40
275 to 299 pounds 41
300 to 324 pounds 42
325 to 349 pounds 43

Make these adjustments to the Good Health Guidelines to include the nutrients you need as a nursing mother:

Increase your servings of milk products to 3 each day to ensure adequate protein, calcium, and fluid intake.
Increase your vegetable and fruit intake to a minimum of 8 servings per day to boost your intake of necessary vitamins and minerals.
Increase your servings of oil to 3 teaspoons per day for more vitamin E.
Increase your water intake from the minimum of 6 glasses per day to at least 8. Being well-hydrated contributes to your milk supply.

I still have my old points guides so I can start tracking my points and maybe even do some walking or treadmill tonight. Will check in tomorrow on what I actually did. Thanks!

OK I am going to first get back on my vitamins and fiber pills and cinnamon, to help with giving my body what it needs and filling me up so I dont eat as much or creave the carbs as much. That is the goal for this week just to do that. Then next week I will start to watch my eating and portion control again. (I was doing so good but it all went out the window so fast).

Sherri
11-09-2006, 08:02 AM
Hi! Well, I didn't count points, but I did write down what I ate. Also took a walk around the block with Ava in her wrap. About 3/4 of a mile, not far, but it was dark and drizzling. It was fun. Then C went out and got Ben & Jerry's. Sigh. I only had one serving. And I didn't write it down. Till now, anyway. Well, today is another day!

lisamarie
11-09-2006, 08:15 AM
Ok...here is what I ate yesterday. I did the calories and points total. He told me when I worked out lastnight that I needed to go home and eat something else so I would be closer to my calories. So here we go...

BREAKFAST-
1-banana=110 calories....or.....1 pt
1 coffew w/4teasp cream=60 cal...or.... 1 pt.
1-Rasp. LitenFit Yogurt=45.....or.... 1pt

LUNCH-
SALAD
-2c. Salad Spinach=20 cal....or... 0pts
-1/4c. Light Tuna=60 cal...or... 1.5pts
-2TBS FF Ranch=50 cal....or.... 1pt
-1/4c. Low Fat Mz Cheese=70 cal..or... 2pts
-5 croutons=30 cal...or...1pt
-5 grape tomato=?cal...or 0 pts
-----------------------
1 apple=45cal..or...1pt
2-16.9oz water

SNACK-
2c. Special K=220 cal....or...4pts
1c 2% milk=130 cal...or...3pts
1-16.9oz water

DINNER-
1 ground turkey patty=140 cal....or ...3pts
Mustard=0cal...or... 0pts
1/4c Moz Cheese=70 cal...or....2pts
Grape Tomatoes=?...or ...0 pts
1 pear=45 cal...or 1 pt
Coke Zero=0cal...or....0pts
1/2c. FF Cot Cheese=80cal..or...2pts.

SNACK-
2c. Special K=220 cal....or...4pts
1c 2% milk=130 cal...or...3pts
1-16.9oz water

So I had a total of ....31.5 POINTS...and 1725 CALORIES...

He wants me to eat 2500..but I dont think Im goin to be able to do points and calories...because I ate good and still had half a point left sice I get 32pts...but I have to eat 2500 cals. So I might find a half way point or something...Like 2000-2200 cals. We shall seeeeeee.

LM -- Wow, you're off to a wonderful start. With this new plan, when should you start to see some results??

Oh yeah, did you tell the trainer anything about pcos, insulin resistance, etc.? Just wondering if that came up, since that could alter your dietary needs.

GREAT JOB!!!

Sherri
11-09-2006, 10:00 AM
Lisa, thanks for the encouragement!

Sounds like you're eating healthy, but it would be hard to follow two guidelines at once, your trainer & WW. Can you start from the trainer's calorie goal and then go down gradually? Also, good point from Tracy about talking to the trainer about PCOS/metabolism stuff.

Have a great day!!

lisamarie
11-09-2006, 10:23 AM
I pm'd Tracy my answer but I'll post it here too. lol

I didnt tell him I have PCOS. Just because when you tell people about it anyways..most dont believe it. So I didnt want that to look like an excuse to him..which I know thats how he would look at it.
This helped me lose 40lbs when I had Emma so with this added excerise it should help.
I am comfortalbe with WW...but I want to stay kinda close to what he has me on. I told him that too and he said that was great and if I was willing to calculate for two programs thats awesome too. He said just to try to get close to the calorie goal because if not it will throw my body into starvation mode. So Im goin to keep doin what Im goin. Now once I lose weight..I should be ok and just be able to stick with one progrem..but for now I like to see how it is goin both ways.

tracy
11-09-2006, 10:30 AM
Isn't is totally counter-intuitive (my big word for the day!!) that you should eat more to lose weight!?!

I know it's true, because in starvation mode, you're body will hold onto fat for dear life. But, it's just so strange to me to eat more for weight loss. Bodies are nutty!!

mara232
11-09-2006, 10:44 AM
Lisa - you are doing GREAT!!!

mara232
11-09-2006, 12:02 PM
I'll have to post my points from last night - but i did well. I also ate cereal for dinner! LOL But my cereal is 5g fibre so it was only 2pts! I love it. The cereal is All Bran Strawberry Bites! I ate this cereal every night while pregnant with A. YUM!!

Anyway - here is what I have had today so far:

BREAKFAST
coffee(crm/sugar) 3

LUNCH
diet coke 0
2 slices multigrain 4
oven roasted turkey 3
mustard 0
lettuce 0
tomoato slice 0
pickle 0
Mexican bean soup 4

SNACK
Hershey chocolate 1

Total 15

I have a lot of points left. I missed Breakfast because I was so busy. I may go get a yogurt later from the convenience store here at work. It is awesome - it's like work is it's own town. Everything is just at my fingertips!

Sherri
11-09-2006, 01:54 PM
Mara, good for you! I'm a little rusty with points values, but here's my list so far for today including dinner plans. I usually start off really well for breakfast, and then it's all downhill! Today, Carol packed my lunch & snacks! :)

Breakfast:
Oatmeal (regular old fashioned kind) with lots mixed in: raisins, walnuts, a pinch of flax and sesame seeds, cinnamon with vanilla soy milk

Snacks (I graze all day from my lunch): pretzels and an apple

Lunch:
Ham sandwich with mustard
2 mini chocolates from coworker's candy dish (special dark & twix)- okay my boss' dish when he was away from his desk. He keeps it just inside his open door so I know I can't be the only one who does this!

Snacks: Light, fat free yogurt and peach fruit cup; maybe a rice cake later

Dinner: Spaghetti & turkey meatballs, maybe a salad w/light dressing

Huge cup of water each time I go upstairs to pump (2x mornings, 1x afternoon)

After that, I don't know if there will be dessert. We have some fat free pudding but are in an "ice cream run" habit lately. Also I would love a mocha now. Will have to do all the points later.

mara232
11-09-2006, 02:28 PM
Good job Sherri! But now I am hungry for icecream!

I did get a chocolate gold nugget (Hershey's) from a co-worker but am not sure of the points. (I need to remember my slide for tomorrow):

3g fat
1g fibre
50 cal

And yes - I ONLY had one! Whoohoo for me! :P

lisamarie
11-09-2006, 02:40 PM
Mara-it says 1 pt.

Sherri...that is awesome. I was lookin at the icecrema sectino the other day and Weight Watchers has tons of new icecream items. I plan on getting some when I go to town tomorrow. And they are pretty low in points.

Mara..you are doin great too!!!!!!!!!

I will post later tonight or early tomorrow what I have today.

Wow...I dont know what to do. Hmmm.....I hate doin the calories thing.
When I was on WW last year...I loved counting points and eating healty..but when I wanted something I could have it..just had to add it in the points. So IM still experimenting with what I like.

As you see I ate ALL day and still came up shy of the 2500 he wants me to have. I felt sick though..I ate too much and I know this is stupid..but I feel like Im missing a full feeling meal ya know? Eventhough all I do is eat all day.

So...Im gonna experiment more with the food. I need more of a heavy meal that makes me satisfied. Like Tracy said..I feel like all I do is eat all day...which before I didnt do..I would eat about 3-4 times a day..just snackin and then actually have meals. So....Im a work in progress. LOL!

mara232
11-10-2006, 07:43 AM
Lisa - you're doing real good! Since you complained about not feeling full - her eis some tips I can come up with that may help you.

What is see for breakfast...the problem is you're eating empty calories. You'd probably be better skipping the bacon and butter on your toast for breakfast and having a tbsp of peanut butter. That would fill you up more.
And you would pass on saturated fats that are bad fo ryou anyway.

For lunch, I think you need more protein. What did you have on your salad? How about cutting up an egg on it or some ham and FF cheese? I like garbanzo beans (chick peas) on my salad.

For dinner I would have had my hamburger on a high fibre roll. That would have filled you up more and would have been 3-4pts.

lisamarie
11-10-2006, 08:58 AM
Thanks Mara! :D

On my salad..I have 1/4c. Tuna...1/4c. LF Moz Cheese. I keep forgetting to boil an egg. lol

Im gonna try what you said to see if it helps...Im lost. So hopefully this will help.

Im goin to the doc today..they usually never weigh me..but Im goin to ask so I have a real number. Then I can see what my at home scale says and go from there.

mara232
11-10-2006, 09:02 AM
Ugh - you are brave woman! My doc gives the good ol "Lose weight" speech when he weighs me. I just avoid giongt o see him. He's a health nut (which is really good for a doctor) but still...

lisamarie

I knew I was gettin big. But I have never weighed 300. God...I weighed 297lbs..but not 300. Another huge reality check.

So there you have it. I told myself I was goin to be honest with you girls and if it means embarassing myself telling you my weight..then so be it. Damn....Hmmph....

mara232
11-10-2006, 01:49 PM

Amy....Welcome welcome

I just think everyone does whatever they want on here. I just started last Tuesday. And I have decided to post what I eat everyday to hold me accountable. lol Plus it takes more time so I dont have the chance to eat. LOL!

YOu can post whatever you like. A weigh in each week. What you eat each day. The kind of excerising you do. Whatever you want.

Welcome again! :D

Thank you very much for the info. As a matter of fact I just got a gym membership and happen to be focusing on working out right now. The only problem is that I can't go every day and I'm not sure how much good it will be or if its worth the 50 bucks a month. Actually I guess I do think its worth it but I'm worried its not enough. Does anyone else have any suggestions about how much/what type of exercise is the best for losing weight?

Ok so I am supposed to go to the gym tonight since I wasn't able to this morning and so Far I have just been doing a half hour on the treadmill. I tried to do the bike but, well I hate it. So I am getting a little bored with the treadmill and was thinking that I might try that low impact thing (kinda looks like your skiing if your on it. gazelle???) but I am afraid I will fall off it since it hangs in the air, or worse yet break it (i'm kinda accident prone) And I was wondering if any one else had much experience with it that didn't involve falling off or breaking it? Is it easy enough that I could just hop on it and go? or is it tricky? :?

LisaMarie -- You're doing great!! Brick ****house here you come :)

I do notice you probably need more water. Was hard for me at first, too. Put a lemon/lime/orange slice in it if you need more taste. I think you're supposed to take your body weight * .5 and that's how many ounces you need to drink per day. I know it's alot, but will become a habit soon.

It'll keep you hydrated for working out and may even fool your tummy into thinking you've eaten more than you have -- hence, more weight loss :) My skin looks a lot better, too!!

Welcome, Amy J. No real advice on the machines. I tried the skiier once, but felt that all limbs were working independently of each other and I was going to seriously hurt myself of others

Hi Amy,

Sounds like the elliptical. There are different ones, some with arm movements and some without. They do take awhile to get used to and trust me, I am the least coordinated person you will ever meet, but after a month or so I felt totally comfortable. Now I don't even hold on when I use the ones without the arm propel things (I don't know how else to describe them?!) although I use the ones with the arm thingys when I can cause they burn more calories. I only use this machine and the stairmaster cause changing up the settings and intervals keeps me from getting too bored. Good luck!!!!!!

hi girls...WOW everyone is doign so great...i actuall was able to semi-behave while on my little vacation...i swam a few times (and hit the hot tub) and i also danced my butt off two nights so i counted that as my exercise for that day...i drank quite a bit but most of it was liquor that didn't have any or little cals, & fat...now some of that was mixed with minimal amounts of OJ or diet soda but not too bad...stayed away from the beer cause 1) i get horrid hangovers from it & 2) it is more fattening

anyway i tried to eat pretty good and i think i suceeded, not where i hae been at but it was a good shock to my body so now when i cut back again it will have a little more effect...and it's back to the gym full force...i also start my YMCA membership on Dec. 1st so i can go there to swim on my other days off from the firehouse

KEEP IT UP GIRLS>>>EVERYONE"S DOING SO WELL!!!!

Lisamarie- You are doing great! Sometimes when I am not good for one day I have a really hard time being good again but you were able to just do what you had been doing. Good for you!

As for me... I was not so good but yesterday I was pretty good about what I ate and today I was on my bike for half an hour. It's something. right? I still hav ea cold though so it is hard to exercise for too long and be able to breath as well...

OK, dh and I made a menu for the next week that will be good and low carb. I still haven't been able to get out and get a South Beach Diet book yet. I am trying to decide if I am going ot do that or just do what worked for me last time I lost a lot of weight.

medic_632
11-16-2006, 03:52 PM
sarah my suggestion would be to do what works best...

i couldn't do low carb it made me feel very sick and dopey all the time...my sugar was actually outta whack so i had to quit...this time i have cut most processed carbs...candies, processed white pastas/breads, etc...and switched to whole grain, lower fat breads and pastas, and plenty of fruits cause they have natural sugars that aren't as bad for you

Lisa you are doing so great...

i am having roasted lemon-pepper chicken for dinner and broccoli with rice on the side...YUMMY

last night i made Beef & Broccoli and DH andthe kids loved it...Dh is on a NO Carb diet and he loved it, ate a whole plate full...i mixed mine & the kids with whole grain borwn rice...they also loved it, all of them ate double servings

and get this it was low-calorie, low-fat, & Low-Carb!!! grante di tweaked the recipie for it to make it that way but i have to admit it really didn't taste any different than what i get from the chinese rest. and it was REALLY YUMMY and filling...if anyone wants the recipie I will be glad to send it!!!

Hey gals! Just wanted to ask if anyone is having a much harder time losing weight since the little one? My first 7lbs practically fell off, but now I can't seem to lose anymore. I am doing what I did a few years ago. That time I lost 50lbs, relatively fast... about 3 months. I am doing the same thing... low carb, only whole grains, no processed food, no sugar... etc. Just doesn't seem to be working as well. My period is regular again though... so it must be doing something.

medic_632
11-18-2006, 09:49 AM
he will probably say something different but the nutrionist i see says that as long as i stay within my calorie goals that it won't hurt to eat some "bad" choices once in a while...which i do sometimes...i don't know about the "point" system that you use (is that weight watchers?) but as long as i stay within my cals she doesn't yell at me, maybe a littel frown over some stuff but it ry to eat that stuff early in th eday so it has more time to burn off while i'm active...okay i've typed enough...talk soon

back to the gym today...oh yeah a lisa did you say that DH is tired of you going to the gym???

lisamarie
11-18-2006, 09:55 AM
Yeah Tj he is tired of me goin already. lol BUT he has been working alot of overtime. But I try to make it that when he gets home he doesnt have to give them a bath or feed them. Just put them to bed. I was goin to go later and put them to bed myself...but he is like.."go earlier". I think just so he can get a slab when I get home. lol ONe other factor is that is it 15mins each way...so thats a half hour of driving. Not to mention the gas money. lol

Once the over time settles I dont htink he will mind much. Although...he has made a remark or two about how he thinks we are goin to much. Our goal is to go 6 days a week and have one day of rest. This is just until I lose my 30lbs..then I wont mind missing 2days..but no more than that.

Yeah Im sure Frank will think its horrrible. BUT he wants us to stay away from bread, pasta, etc. I cant do that. Ive done it before and yeah you lose..but I was miserable. Im not miserable now. I like knowing I can have something..but in moderation.

medic_632
11-18-2006, 10:32 AM
i am the same way...i eat alot of stuff i love but alwasy in moderation...well most times anyway

I'm with you Lisa, I was never able to give up carbs completely. I turned into a raging lunatic and sad as it is to realize how much I need those starches for my mood, the only way I could do it is if the whole family was gone for 3-4 days, which isn't gonna happen. So I still eat them, I just measure them and try to always eat a carb with protein. You are gonna teach that Frank a thing or two about weight loss Lisa-style! Going by the book might make you lose but if you deprive yourself of whole food groups you end up caving in and gaining it back. So there Frankie-boy (I'm being a little rebellious bI*ch on your behalf  )

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that my mom just got the book... the YOU diet. By the drs that are on Oprah all the time. They mention PCOS in the book a few times. I haven't go to read the whole thing, just glance through it. It looks like it follows mostly what I tried to do the first time I lost 50lbs. Just thought you might want to check it out.
Gotta go make lunch!

Okay - I am feeling better and need to get back on the weightloss bandwagon. I had lost 7lbs last week when i was sick and gained back 4.5lbs back. Which is okay since I am sure it was partly dehydration. And partly because Sudafed is a HUGE appetitire suppressor! WOW! I need to do this - we want to start TTC in February.

Ok....will post what I ate tomorrow.

But went and worked out tonight.
Did 30min on treadmill at 3.0 with a 3.0 incline.
Frank said Jewels was doin her situps wrong. He told her she had to go slower for it to work. LIke the way I was doin. lol SO that made me feel better as to why she was goin faster..she wasnt doin them right. hehe
Then the leg lifts. He said we need to up each set. NOT see hwo many we can do. Like he wanted up to start out at one rep of ten...then another rep of ten and so on. Sooooooo we tried that...alot harder. LOL! But I got 15 on my first rep(nonstop)..then 10 on the other two. lol

I weighed in today and lost 3more lbs. I hope I stay at this rate. lol I just have to stay determined even though dh is still having sh!t fits over me goin.

Lisa == Sorry dh is still being stubborn about your new pastime, but it's nice to know he likes having your company and misses you when you're gone:D Over time he'll get used to it and won't remember what life was like before Lisa the Gym Bunny moved in

Health benefits aside, the thing about being a sahm is that we don't have the rewards (i.e. $ and promotions) of the work world and so the tangible benefits of exercise (#'s lost, energy gained, better mood) are really important. It was so good when I was on a weight-loss regimen to see that the time I put in, actually got me somewhere. The same can't always be said for being a mom, but the rewards are different and much greater :D :D

ok..major whining comin on...

Thursday and Friday I hadnt ate good. But I worked out Thursday night and then we skipped Friday. But we went in this monring to wokr out. I did 50 situps in a row like he wnated....he wanted up to build up our reps..not the way we were doin it. Well anyways...I only got one rep of 50...then one of 30..which sucked. Then I could barely do my leg lifts. I had been doin one rep of 15...then two of 10. I couldnt even do those..I tried so hard. SO I just chalked it up to not eating good for two days. Well I get on the treadmill and I sh!t you not after 3 minutes my legs hurt so bad. Like the sides of my legs from the side of my knee down to my ankle. I was walking 2.9 and hadnt even done my incline yet. So then I give myself a 2.5 incline(which is still less than what I usually do) and I COULD NOT do it. My legs hurt like never before. So I took a break. Then started back up but only walking 2.5mph..which is where I started out when I first started going. THen in walks Frank...I didnt even think he was there..but I was wrong. He asked how things were goin with everything and I told him how I had ate bad for the two days and he just said to get back on track..but wanted to know why I was goin so slow..so I explained. He said..'your heartrate is 115..it needs to be at least 152' I told him I knew that and how it bad my legs hurt. He didntknow why they were hurting. He then went on to ask how many minutes we were doin on the treadmill and Jewels does 35 and I have tried to work myself up to 30. He seemed disappointed and was like.."you guys should be close to an hour of walking" He said we are behind and need to be walking at LEAST 45min and then up to an hour. I felt like he was sayign we werent working hard enough. But I have to say when I go in..I give it my all. Today was werid because I couldnt do it..I pushed myself and my legs hurt so bad. I still dont know why they were hurting so bad. I also told Frank I cant come in there and workout for 1.50 hrs a night. I CANT do that. ITs hard enough to work out for 1 hr. So Im either goin to have to do my ball exercises and leg lifts at home and then do cardio there..because I cant do it all there. I just felt like such a loser.
I know this is horrbile but I came home and ate. I felt like such a moron today not being able to walk but it was like my body just shut down.
Ok..just had to get that off my chest...I was really upset and disappointed in mysefl ...then to top it off Frank saying we werent even doin enough...ugggg.

Hey Lisa!

Tell Frank to shut up. You are doing as much as you can with your family life also demanding a lot of you. He should know better. Building the routine into your life is by far the most important part of thing to do in the beginning. Over time the intensity and duration will take care of itself as you are able to naturally do more and your body will crave a challenge. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who is simply amazed at how committed you are to making it to the gym!!!!

Listen to your body. All the work and prep of TGiving not to mention your fridge debacle is taking its toll. Give your body a day of rest and you'll come back stronger than ever!!!

Sounds like Frank's personal training career is gonna be short-lived if he can't be more realistic with his clients. Encouraging you and giving you goals is one thing but giving you hard-and-fast rules that you can't logistically accomplish because of real life is not a recipe for success. Forget him Lisa, you're doing great!!!!!!!!!

lisamarie
11-25-2006, 08:50 PM
I think he forgets that Jewels is umm...155 lbs and Im close to 300. Im not using that as a crutch..but son of a b!tch..so far Ive kept up with her.

He did say that he is proud that we are coming in six days a week and that we are doin it THROUGH the holidays and how most folks wait till after. I just am amazed that he wants us to be at an hour after 2.5 weeks. Now I know I needed to up my intensity to get my heartrate higher..and I was upping my spped to 3.0...I was goin to do the 3.0 till next Tuesday and then up it again..but he just really threw me off today.

I still plan on goin tomorrow to workout. I need to set up a time with Jewels. Thing with her is..she has no commitments..her dd is 14 so really doesnt have to answer kids or a dh. I have the added stress of a crappy dh who really is annoyed with my leaving(even though he now says hes not).

I WILL do this....just a crappy day. I go to the grocery store tomorrow and have to buy new crap since the other stuff got nasty from the other fridge. So I have to get back in gear.

Dh DID say today that he can tell Im losing weight. I think he was just trying to make me feel better since I was so grumpy. lol

Thanks Elsie. Hey I seen that your real name is Laura on another thread. Where did you get Elsie at?

amy j.
11-25-2006, 08:56 PM
Lisa Marie-
Don't feel bad! You know when you are pushing yourself to the max and when your not. You have to listen to your body over other people sometimes. Also I think sometimes that people who are in shape forget how hard it is when your first starting out and not in shape. They forget that a huge part of the battle sometimes is just to get yourself to go to the gym in the first place and if you need to take it slow occasionally then you should. Also your getting healthier, not only for yourself but also for your family and if in the process you forget to actually spend time with your family then you are kind of defeating the purpose. Ultimately what I am saying is that you know when you can do more and when you are at your max. Listen to yourself.

lisamarie
11-25-2006, 09:03 PM
Exactly Amy...

I know I am pushing it with being gone 1.5 hrs to begin with. Thats driving about 10.12minutes there...and then that back...then the toher time Im workign out. I know my dh would really flip his lid if I did 1.5 hrs on working out and then driving time.
I can honestly say...that would make me mad too.
SO I think I might just do the ball and floor excercises a few nights a week ..and then concentrate on cardio while Im there.

hehe..now Im getting fired up about it again..heheh

Hey Lisa!!

I should change my screen name ... it's "elsie" just cause my initials are l.c. (sounds like elsie) -- corny I know. At the time I started posting there was another Laura who posted a lot so I just did it to be diff.

All I know is that at my gym they tell you not to focus on anything bigger than just getting there and showing up for the first six weeks. Over time they've noticed that the people who stick with it are the ones who worry about getting into a good routine, not the ones who come in with unrealistic goals -- those people usually end up injured and/or discouraged.

I'm bummed out about my weight right now. It doesn't help that my own mother (63 y.o.) is thinner and dresses in hipper clothes than me. And my sil's both look like they never had kids. I love them to death and am happy for them but in one of their cases she literally couldn't gain weight if she wanted to -- she was in her size 4 jeans within a week of giving birth -- both times. My other sil is the same way, except that she eats off of everyone's plate and is constantly cutting leftover slivers of pie and also is tiny. I hate my metabolism.

Hey Lisa,

Yeah I guess you definitely don't want to tick off Frank if he's the owner. I don't want you to either -- I want him to be successful enough to start a franchise and open a 24-hour gym here!!!!

As far as the muscle soreness, I think you're just feeling the wear and tear of all this effort. I'm never one to say "no pain no gain" but it could just be a sign that you're getting stronger but need a day of rest since you build muscle when you push yourself, get tiny tears in the fibers and they heal and become stronger. I wouldn't push to the point of pain but if it's just soreness you can actually look at it as a good sign _and_ a cue to take 1-2 days off. Maybe try some new stretches on your off day(s). Then you'll probably be rarin to go to go on day 2 or 3. I know it's hard to take days off when you're trying to get into a routine but it's super important to rest too, or else you could get a bona fide injury and be out of commission. If you're scared to take those two days completely "off" you could even go to the gym to stretch and stuff so you don't get out of the loop entirely. But I definitely think your body is telling you what you need to know!

Just think of his more annoying comments when your motivation is lagging and picture his face on the treadmill! Maybe that's been his intention all along, to p!ss you off enough to prove him wrong ... lol

lisamarie
11-26-2006, 02:49 PM
Elsie...

I have had soreness...especially when I first started out. I could handle that. But this is big time pain. That gets worse the more I push it.

Now though..my left foot and lower leg is kinda hurting and numb/tingling. I am baffled as to what I did to it.
I keep freakin myself out thinking.."im so obese my legs are shutting down". lol

elsie
11-26-2006, 03:14 PM
Hmmm....sounds like the only thing to do is to rest for a little bit longer, say 3-4 days, and see how you feel then, and call your doc if it's not better. The tingling/numbness sounds like it could be a sciatic nerve problem ? But you can usually remedy that with a really good pair of sneaks.

Did you get new sneaks? Could be your old shoes just offer no support and your back and legs have absorbed the impact of all the treadmill walking. Or maybe if you got new ones they're not the right ones for you. I know if dh's shoes get worn down he can has that kind of pain. Did it feel ok when you were on the bike? Guess the only thing to do is to take a rest, then try to narrow down the problem.

Don't worry, I'm sure it's just a minor setback. But you should definitely quit now while you're ahead and don't have a major injury. You don't want to derail the whole process. I bet you feel much better after a few days.

P.S. Might as well get some useful advice from Frank about this since you have to listen to his crap as well!!! Good luck Lisa!!! We're all pulling for you!

Amy- I wish that I could go on a walk today but it is raining and only in the 30s so that is out. On Wednesday the high is supposed to be 25 and the low 7. I think it will be awhile until we get to take walks again. I love getting out in the fresh air and getting exercise though.

Lisamarie- You are doing great work! Getting into the habit is so much. I really, really, really need to do it but I have been saying that for months and not doing anything about it.

Everyone is doing so well. I just can't seem to get motivated for some reason. I really need to. I would feel so much better if I got out and exercised more. I would also feel better if I ate the right way.

Dh has a mini gym in his office that his boss said it was ok if I came in and used it. It has an elliptical, a recumbant stationary bike, a treadmill, free weights and a crossbow. I have a stationary bike at home and a mini stair stepper. Do you guys think with these things I could get the workout I need without having to get a gym membership?

Bummer, LM -- thought that Coke Zero stuff might appeal to you. Personally, if I were you and I loved the stuff, I would drink it in moderation and skimp on a sweet somewhere else. You gotta live a little, even when dieting!!

As for holidays, I think the average person gains like 6 pounds per year, this time of year. So, if you can lose a bit or just maintain, that's awesome. I agree -- cut yourself some slack. In January, there's so much motivation in the air, that you'll make up for any lost time!!

Sarah -- that sounds like a complete gym to me. Try it out...sometimes the gym is more for motivation than equipment-selection. If you don't need that motivation (because you've found your own!!), I'd stick with the freebies. Use the money to reward yourself for pounds lost, instead :D

In my Upperarm...I didnt lose anything...In fact I think its a half in more..but I could have measure wrong. I can remember which freckle I was goin by. hehe

My uppper thigh was the same.

My bust I lost 1.5 inches

My hips I lost 1 inch. BUT the first time I measured myself I was wearing a pair of jeans(which I shouldnt have been) and today I was wearin a pair of loose pj shorts..so today was more accurate. So I could have lost more..but Im goin to do it this way...

Then measurement at my belly button..I stayed the same.

Ok...anyways..thats that.

LM -- you might be gaining weight, because it's muscle too. I know it still sux, but muscle weighs more than fat and will cause you to burn more fat /calories when you're doing absolutely nothing (love that perq!!). The good part is that it's very dense, so the inches will start to come off...even if you're gaining weight :D

You're doing great !!

i have totally slacked off. I was trying to be so good this week, but DH decided to surprise me monday and took me to lunch (YUM SUSHI) and then i had to teach class monday night so it was snack food, and tuesday DH brought the kids to me afterwork so he could go to his group therapy session, and we had burger king....now i did not get to eat my fries because my little piggie Kallie decided to pick them up and stuff them in her mouth. I swear, this child can put away some food!!! Friday after thanksgiving, she ate 13 fish sticks!! YEP...13....In one sitting.
Last night she ate my french fries, TJ's french fries, the bottom piece of my chicken sandwhich bun, and baby food veggies. OMG.....And she is not gaining any weight!! Urg....If only we could all be so lucky!

Lisa, you are not getting enough protein!!
You are doing great with the Consistency I was talking about in my PM to you!
GOOD JOB!
Now just start getting in some more protein, Yes eggs, fish, chicken, cottage cheese.....
This will help in reducing ALL that sugar you are having, yes including oranges--it's still a sugar fix right.

Wednesday you had a total of 60-65gr. of protein. You need to have protein every single meal even snacks. Don't have all carbs!

Apple and 1TBS all natural Peanut Butter or Almond Butter.
Low fat cheese too, ok! Couple pieces of turkey with carrot sticks.
Handful of nuts and an orange. Hummus and crackers or veggies! What about a protein drink! I use JayRobbs. I love the Pina Colada flavor with frozen berries, water, icecubes, and plain yogurt.....I throw in a TBS of Flax Oil which I recommend to ALL my pre-and Post pregnant ladies. Look for Omega 3 Flax oil.
You can use this as part of your dressing on a salad, or drizzle over steamed veggies.
It is the good fat like you find in avocados, salmon, and almonds.

The protein powder I can put in my plain yogurt with some nuts. I can make pancakes out of it with eggwhites, cinnamon, protein powder,
LF cottage cheese, blend and make some protein pancake snacks! YUM!

Ok I've rambled.........just want to pipe in and wish you girls all the best!
:P

That's funny, LM, I was going to say the same thing about the protein! Valstarr is right too. It helps me out sooooo much with my sugar cravings! I never eat any fruit without some kind of protein, it slows down the glucose absorption.

How are your legs??

oh wow..so when I eat a banana or apple I need to eat protein huh? Thing is..I have a hard time measuring calories or pts for protein. Unless its pb(but that is HIGH cal and pts) So what are other proteins other than tuna and cottage cheese?

elsie
11-30-2006, 10:07 PM
Peanut butter (sugarless) is the best way to pack some protein into your snacks. Or plain nuts. Those mozzarella cheese stix are pretty good too.

LisaMarie - I have always found that when I ramp up my protein intake it has always helped in my weightloss efforts. But with that being said I would have to drop something else, not just add more protein. AND more strength training. I'm not telling you that's what you should be doing, just telling you what worked for me in the past.

Read labels of the foods you're eating, see how much protein is there. Protein powder shakes are good as well as bars, BUT watch the fat grams (and sugar) sometimes their not any better than eating a candy bar. If my memory serves me correctly it's 100 calories for every 2 grams of fat. ie: if something has say 100 calories but 3+ grams of fat, then it's like candy.

I am not sure what to tell you about what to add... because I am not really familiar with Weight Watchers. I have never been successful with losing weight by counting calories and exercising.
I do agree about the protein powder though. If you like milk, you can just mix it in and it adds quite a bit of protein. I always get one without sugar, just check the ingredients. (Whey protein, by the way.)
I usually use natural pb as my extra protein. Cheese is good too.

Good luck!!

Borrowed turbo jam from a friend. I think once I get the hang of it, I should start losing again. Winter is a hard time for me to lose weight, because I like to walk. It is too cold for me to walk right now. The air really hurts my lungs.
