i was just disgnosed with pcos, and was given synthroid 25mcg. the Dr said it would also help with weight loss, but I googled "pcos and weight loss" and all i found were tons stories about people *gaining* weight on synthroid.

gaining more weight is that very last thing i want(my bmi is 33.1)

Can anyone tell me if it causes weight gain or weight loss? or which is more likely?

Synthroid is a medication to treat hypothyroidism. Are you hypothyroid?

Synthroid is used to treat an underactive thyroid; one of the symptoms of an underactive thyroid is weight gain. If your thyroid is normal taking synthroid will cause your thyroid to become hyperthyroid (overactive) which will cause you to lose weight. I have read that some women will use synthroid to lose weight, especially if they are obese. So yes taking synthorid will most likely cause you to lose weight because it is basicly speeding up your metabloism. My question is is your DR treating your PCOS with another medication such as Metformin? Metformin will also help you lose weight. Sorry I just read back through your post, you said that you are hypothyroid. It will take a while for the DR to get your synthroid adjust and your TSH back to normal. I had to ask my normal Dr to send me to an Endo so he could get my levels back to normal. My TSH levels were around 3.8 and I was still feeling really bad, I did alot of reading and realized that I needed to be down around .2, which I finally am and I feel so much better. Basicly I started out at the dose you are on and then had to go back every six weeks and have my levels check and then my synthroid would be increased by 25 mg. I take 200mg a day now. Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, it works better that way.
Make sure that your Dr is treating you for the PCOS too. Having both conditions under control will help you with your weight lose.

I have both conditions an underactive thyroid and PCOS. I see and Endo and finally have my thyroid back to normal. I take Sythroid 200mg and metformin 100mg. I have finally been able to lose weight to date I have lost 40lbs.

I truly believe that my body is finally working like it should, because of the medication, but I am no longer storing the food I eat as fat because my insulin is working properly and my Metablism is finally normal because my thyroid is under control. But I also made the choice to eat better. I eat smaller more frequent meals, I eat healthy foods, instead of junk food. I know that if I eat too much sugar or fatty food I get stomach aches a side effect of the Metformin. Just make sure that your Dr is checking your thyroid levels every six weeks until you are in normal ranges. These vary from .2-5.0. Pay close attention to how you are feeling, if you are still having symptoms of Hypothyroid or just not feeling right but the Dr is saying your levels are normal, push him to get your levels lower, if he won't do it then request that he send you to an Endo. Who specialize in this, and can help with your PCOS. Do some research on Hypothyroidism you will b suprised what you learn things that most Drs don't tell you.

Good luck.:
