Hi all from Florida! Thought I would be the first to get our forums started with a welcome and see how many individuals besides the three I know that are from Florida!

Hi I am in Florida too. I live in Tampa. I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS, so any help would be great.

Looking forward to being part of this forum.

Hello! I live in Orange Park (Jacksonville area).
Happy to be here. I discovered I have PCOS almost 2 years ago when my dh and started TTC.

So, now, we are both working on our weights and overall health. And for me that also means trying to regulate cycles and all that good stuff.

Welcome!!! We have kinda gotten a group going (since there are several of us in the same area)... I come home (to Jax) often and we've been trying to meet up... You would make #5 if your intrested... :)

04-09-2005, 09:13 PM
Sure thing! If you don't mind me asking, why won't the dr give you Met?

04-10-2005, 01:05 AM
I am from South Florida. I live in Fort Lauderdale. PCOS March 2004, TTC March 2005 Metformin 1500mg and clomid 10mg round two this month

04-10-2005, 10:42 AM
I live in Pinellas Park. Was diagnosed 5/96 originally put on Rezulin, then Met and currently Avandia. We TTC beginning 1/96, Clomid from 2/96 to 3/97 (! they don't do that anymore!) Began injectibles and TI/AI 5/97. m/c 12/97, 8/98, 4/99. Lost fertility coverage after lap 1/00. Went on bcp and found out 9/28/00 that I was 8wks pg at an exploratory u/s for pelvic pain. Go figure!

Anyway, Jack will be 4 in a couple of weeks and I am on Avandia, still having incredible pain especially on left side from huge ovaries. Have lost 35 pounds and actually had "normal" cycles since Jan.

Glad to find you all! Lisa-Marie

I don't exactly know how to work this, but I'll figure it out. I wanted to say hello from the Northwest side of Florida, like sewhit I am also in Pensacola. I was diagnosed in New York, NY about 3 years ago. Anyone trying to concieve? :D

04-11-2005, 10:28 AM
Yes, my DH and I are TTC - though for us that means getting my body balanced so that I can conceive. I take Met, go to the gym 3 times a week, and of course and trying to change my eating habits. Also, am using natural progesterone cream to help regulate my cycles.

04-11-2005, 10:40 AM

If you are intrested I'm thinking about trying to set up a local support group. I think if we promote PCOS in this area, it will open up a lot of insight, and give relief to the many women out there who haven't been diagnosed, and are wondering whats "wrong" with them.

Just moved here from NY

Hello everyone. I was diagnosed with PCOS back in 98/99 can't really remember. Tried Glucophage and hated it. Started TTC in January of 2001. Went through 4 cycles of Clomid, 3 cycles of Follistim with IUI over the course of 3 years. (I made the mistake of not going to a fertility specialist right away). Got pg May of 2003 and had my beautiful daughter in Feb of 2004! Now I am trying to regulate my periods without being on the pill. And would like to lose a few pounds too. Sounds like lots of people are having luck with Avandia? BTW I live in St Pete.

I go to the Reproductive Medicine Group, Dr. Tarantino. They have four offices, south tampa - 870-3553, north Tampa - 914-7304, Brandon - 661-9114, clearwater - 727-724-0702. I believe there are five doctors in the group, but I go to Tarantino. I love him, after searching for answers for 2 1/2 years, I walked into his office in a last effort, and he new the minute I started talking I had PCOS. He's a good listener and is knowledgeable about PCOS and the various ways it is treated.

Hope I have been a help.

Hi All! It looks like I started something! Glad to see everyone from around Florida. I think awareness in general in Florida would be good. I know a few other people near me with it that are as involved with it because they are done having children and just want to maintain their life the way it is!

04-14-2005, 12:00 AM
Hi. I'm also in Tampa Bay (in Dunedin). It's nice to see the list revived in some way. :)

Does anyone else have BCBSF's HMO? (aka Health Options) If so, do you know what their coverage of infertility treatments are? I'm going to go back on the Met in October (heaven help me), and off bcp in December, and try just the Met first, but I'm not really optimistic about success.

Hi Lisa, The doctor I went to doesn't give Met (just with PCOS) unless his patients also are IR and he said my tests came out normal.. (I wasn't diabetic or pre-diabetic) What an idiot... Obviously not up with the current info on PCOS... I know they didn't do the right test for IR... Oh well... I will find another doctor when I can (already spent tons of $$ on the other guy)

Hi there!

I'm in Miami. Hello to all!

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2001 when TTC #1. I have been blessed with two wonderful & healthy children. My firt PG was clomid induced. My second was carefully timed immediately following weaning - using the FAM method (TCOYF). & WITH MUCH LUCK!

I'm looking to improve my health and fitness levels. My two pregnancies were hard on my body!

It's nice to find this chat room...

Hi everyone! I'm new to the site and just wanted to introduce myself. So nice to meet other people in Florida!

Is anyone ttc and using acupuncture in addition to other treatment? I started seeing an Acupuncturist a month or so ago and am looking for positive stories!

Hi Everyone,
I've been coming to this board quite sometime but recently moved to Gibsonton, Fl actually in July 2004 so it will be a year soon. I didn't get any treatment from my dr. back home in Ohio except BCP she gave me Clomid also but was afraid to take it cause I didn't want a multiple birth hubby and I decided it needed to happen naturally and it did after 4 years of trying. I actually have 2 kids the first one I had no trouble actually got pregnant young and unexpectedely and then when we were ready for another one and in a position to have another it wouldn't happen that's when I was diagnosed with PCOS that was back in 1995 or so. Since moving here I found a Dr. in Sun City Center (also office in Brandon) who suggested right away that I may need Glucophage due to failed attempts at weightloss and recurrent yeast infections. I started it a week ago and hopefully it will help. Glad to meet others from the area though and hear their input.

Hello! :D
It is nice to be on this site and know there are other women who understand what it can be like to have PCOS.

After reading some of the stories I feel very lucky to have been diagnosed when I was, although I wish I had been told more than "just take the pill and you'll be fine" and "oh, you might have a little difficulty getting pregnant". Now, that was a slight understatement! Teehee!

Anyways, my husband and I live in south St. Pete in a little town called Gulfport. I'm a FL native and was born in Jax but grew up in Orlando area. I moved to Tampa about 8 years ago for work and love it here and would have a hard time moving back to Central FL. Nothing against those of you in Orlando but, the traffic seems to get worse every month! 8)

Thanks for being here, ladies and I hope this finds each of you happy and well.

Hi all,

I am new to this group. I live in Tampa. happy to find supporters here.
My gyno said i am not diabetic and is not ready to give me metformin. Tried clomid twice and took a break.

Is that true that metformin is not for all pcos sufferers. I would welcome any recommendation on a good gyno.

Hi I live in Gainesville FL anyone from here ? Not sure if I have PCOS, Just found out about the condition while watching Birth Day. Havent had a period in a few years doctors says i havent gotten a period cause of weight gain. I dont know. I jsut got married want a baby. Trying to figure out if pregnancy is possible without getting a period. Talk to everyone soon

Hi! This is my first post. I was diagnosed in December after switching doctors. I'm past wanting any more children but am only in my 40's. I am pre-diabetic which is also a new condition I was never diagnosed with until I got my new doctor. I am taking metformin 500 mg. twice a day. It seems to be helping with the blood sugar but not the POS. She now also has me on a birth control called Yasmine. I am just the opposite with my cycle in that mine are very heavy and last at least 5 days. Now that I'm on the birth control, they are much lighter and shorter. I'm loving it! I grew up in Clearwater, and have lived in Tallahassee for almost the past 20 years. I am looking forward to learning more about POS and helping others if I can.

06-06-2005, 11:46 AM
Hi gunnie. :)

It may help to up the dose of Met if you're tolerating it okay but not seeing PCOS symptom improvement.

06-09-2005, 05:23 PM
NeedBaby, my gyno office in Tampa was always good. I was with them for 7 years before I moved to St Pete and am also lucky to have a great doctor there now. The selection of a girlie dr can be personal as everyone has different needs but I'd happily recommend Drs. Yelverton, Lerner, Fallieras, Kilbride, Marston, Jaeger, Minton & Brown in Tampa. They have two locations. I've been to both but preferred the Virgina Ave office. As you can see, they have several practitioners, male and female so I'm sure you'll be able to find someone who is a good fit for you. The office staff is very friendly and I never had any billing problems.

Good luck! Btw, in St. Pete, I'd recommend Beth Benson, M.D.. :D

06-09-2005, 05:35 PM
ShellyBellie and Laurie,
For my RE, I also go to Reproductive Medicine Group in Tampa. I started out seeing Dr. Goodman but was really not happy with the care I rec'd from her. The office staff at N. Tampa is great but there always seemed to be a serious disconnect in communications. I believe this is due more to the doctor than the office staff, but can't be certain. However, I started seeing Dr. Verkauf after an after-hours call for severe pain and I am going to talk to him on Friday about taking over my care. He is very thorough and I feel very comfortable with him. I have also heard very good things about Dr. Terantino. So Laurie, I guess what I'm taking a long time to say is, I have been pleased with the practice Reproductive Medicine Group but can't say the same about Dr. Goodman, although her profile states that she works with PCOS. It may just be more of a personality thing than anything else. Good luck to you!

Hi to all yall Florida gals!! :)

Gunnie, GO NOLE back atcha!! I lived in Tallahassee for 5 years and LOVED IT... Just moved to Fort Myers in July 2004. Have been here almost a year... My sister still lives in Tally (she went to FSU and met her hubby there and they decided to stay- have been there since 1989) And by the way, she also has PCOS... So what doctor are you going to there? I went to North Florida OB-Gyn and my doctor was Andrea King (can't think of her new last name-she got married right before I left)... LOVED HER! She delivered my daughter in 2001... Thats also the office that officially diagnosed me with PCOS... I highly recommend them (and her)...The office is at TMH... :)

06-26-2005, 09:35 PM
I have an internal medicine doctor named Judith Lewis with Capital Health Plan. She is the best! I have never had a doctor that was so open to my opinions and questions!

Hello all,
I just signed up today!

I live in South Florida the Boca Raton area, resently after MANY MANY different type of dr visits did I find one doctor who took the time to listen to me and make an evaluation, that I feel is right on the money. My gyn said she thinks i have PCOS. I did the research and realized that I have almost all of the syptoms. My family has a wide range of problems and it seems that they have all been passed down to me (or are on there way of being passed down to me) my mother has adult diabeties and now she has been diagnosed with Syndrome X (liver problems) BOTH of these are what can happen to someone with Insulin Resistant PCOS if it is not caught in time. I have been putting on ungodly amounts of weight around my middle, I have werid hair growth, no periods when I am not on BC, I have already had a cyst removed from my overy (it was the size of a grapefruit) and for the last two years I have been telling my friends and family that if I dont have children soon, I fear that I will not be able to. Everyone said I was over ecxagerating, I know I am having nightmares and bad feelings for a reason, my body is telling me something is wrong, and alas I have figured it out. I have an apt with my endocronologist tomorrow, hoefully she can get me on some kind of medication that will help me with this Insulin resistant PCOS and weight gain, so that I do not end up getting diabeties and syndrome X like my mother. Just needed to sound off and find some freinds to talk to about this. Thanks for listening.

07-08-2005, 03:01 PM
mchapman, welcome! I'm pretty new to the site too. The Florida thread seems to be a bit slow.
Just wanted to let you know that I went through something similar as far as not getting anyone to listen to me. And then when I finally did find the doctor that diagnosed me, it all made such perfect sense. I'm sure that things will really get going now that you are going to see an endo. Hopefully when you see him/her they will start you on meds to help with the IR and get you started on the infertility stuff if that's what you want.
There is a great support network on this site. You don't feel so alone.
Let us know what the endo says.

Hi everone. This is my first time on this site.
I've been in Tallahassee for almost 4 years now (originally from PA). I was dx with PCOS by an endocrinologist a year ago. She was my 3rd doctor so I was happy to finally get a diagnosis. I've been TTC #1 for about 1.5 years and now I have the help of F.I.R.M - a RE office in Jacksonville.

It's nice to meet everyone!

07-27-2005, 04:36 PM
Welcome to the Board. There are a few of us from the Jacksonville area that are also at FIRM.

08-23-2005, 04:15 PM

I am in Orange Park (Jacksonville). I moved here in June. If there are any get togethers of any sort, I would LOVE to know! I don' t know much about PCOS, but I'm ready to find out and hopefully change my life!

I live in Palm Bay, fl and was diagnosed with PCOS in 1999. Right now I'm fighting with the Navy to approve benefits for my PCOS, the have denied me before. Very depressing stuff. Glad this forum is here.

10-22-2005, 06:26 PM
Hi everyone!
New to the site. I have been diagnosed with PCOS since roughly 2001 when I was 20 years old. Just yesterday was I placed on Metformin extended release to see how that works for me. I have used the Aldactone but without any benefits to speak of. I've noticed there are quite a few Tallahasseeans on here...I am one as well. Lived here for the majority of my 24 years of life. I currently see Dr. Celeste Brickler-Hart for the PCOS. I am not pre-diabetic but I do have low blood pressure. Hope to meet some new PCOS'er friends :D

10-24-2005, 04:44 PM
Are there any RE's in Tallahassee? Or is the closest one FIRM in Jax?

10-25-2005, 09:27 AM
Amanda- on certain days the FIRM travels to Tallahassee if I'm not mistaken...so you wouldn't have to drive here...

10-25-2005, 01:14 PM
Someone else (can't remember who) told me that they come to Tally just for the initial consult. Is that true? Is there a way to find out?

10-26-2005, 04:34 PM
hmmm...that wouldnt make much sense to me...call them:) they're really nice and super helpful:) 904-399-5620....
