Hello all, I just joined here. I found this site looking for more information on taking metphormine or others like it. My doc gave me 1000mg pills and I couldnt get them down, but now I am going back next week to get another dosage. Reading what alot of you have to say, I am nervous about the meds. I'm 290, 5'11, 25 and I've been on yasmine for two years and that made a huge difference in how I felt. Before bc, I was so depressed and my skin cleared u p, although I have alot of scars from all the crappy skin I had. :( I would like to know what you guys think of the meds, are the s/e all that bad, what is it like, did it help you lose weight. I don't have any kids and I am not sexually active so that is not a concern right now. Also, what "ttc" "IR" and "AF" mean. I couldnt follow some of the acroymns. Any comments on your experience with met? Thanks!
Melissa

Melissa,
First welcome! Second, you probably shouldn't be starting on 1000mg of Met. I believe most people start out on 500mg and work up to the 1000mg after a week or two. Are they extended release (XR) or regular? I take XR, which is supposedly much easier on the digestive system. I take it in the evenings after my dinner. I love Met! It and dietary changes have changed my life. Some people don't have side effects other do. Most go away within in a few weeks, some are tied to the foods you eat. If you are on Met then you are probably insulin resistant (IR), which means your body doesn't recognize the insulin it is producing and continues to release more, which causes all sorts of problems. Met resensitizes your body to the insulin. To help with that it is best to eat a diet similar to that of a diabetic. I personally follow South Beach and have had great success, but there are others out there. I truly feel like my lack of side effects is because of the diet. It has also helped me lose 49lbs since 4/28/06, which to me is nothing short of a miracle.
ttc means trying to conceive and af mean aunt flo. :)
Good luck and feel free to ask all the questions you want. Send me a pm if you want.
Hi Melissa! I am almost 24 and was just diagnosed not too long ago. I started Met a little over 2 weeks ago and at the same time started the SB diet. The first night with met I definitely had stomach problems and the second night slighty. I started out at 500mg for a week. Then, after that I was fine. I upped my dosage about a week ago to 1000 mg and experienced no new side effects. I think being on SB really helped! I noticed when I ate some chili (which was supposed to be low fat although probably sugar added, eek) my stomach started really hurting for awhile but it slowly subsided and I learned from that mistake. I think watching what you eat really helps!
If you have any questions, feel free to send me a pm or post them on here! Lots of people here are very knowledgable!!
