One thing about Met is if you don't follow a healthy low carb diet the s/e are often worse. Met is a carb flusher, so obviously if you eat carbs it going to react to it and flush it out.. putting you on the toilet etc.... However, if you watch what you eat, eat low glycemic or low carb you will find the s/e are almost non existant!

Another thing is to ease into the dose, they usually will start you out with a small dose to get you up to 1500 or 2000 mg.. take them gradually until you are up to this amount.

The Met should also help her shed some of the weight gain as will the low carb/low glycemic diet.

Goodluck and keep us posted

I would suggest having her take the Met in between a meal... so maybe take it halfway through her lunch or breakfast.. that seemed to help curb the s/e for me.. As far as the nausea goes, I found eating something to coat the stomach helped me feel better, maybe she could drink a small glass of milk or something.

Hi, my daughter is 14 and was diagnosed this year. Her doctor just put her on bcp's and now we're waiting for her period to start. She's only had one true period since she started in Jan of this year. My daughter isn't taking Met but from what I've read, it seems most people start off at a low dosage such as 500mg and then work their way up. If I read correctly, your daughter is at 1500mg already? Maybe that's why she's having the stomach issues. Just a thought. All this is new to me as well. I see you're in CA., so am I. Good luck and I hope things go well for your daughter.

Yes I notice the same thing that maybe her does is to high?? She is at school right now and just told me she is feeling a bit better.. I’m going check her script when we get home.. And if she is at 1500 and the S/E don’t ease I’m going to call her Doctor.. and yes we are in Southern California.. She was also diagnosed at 14 but we are barley starting treatment do to a uninformed Doctor and mother (me) .. it was this board that made me take her to a different Dr. and he started treatment instantly sadly my daughter has always been I/R and a lot of her symptoms could have been avoided had we started treatment..

It just seems high to start off with, but I'm no doctor. How did you know your daughter was IR? I wouldn't know what the signs were either. My daughter starting getting underarm hair at a very young age. Her doctor had a real bone age test done which came back normal but looking back on it, I wish I had pushed to get some type of testing done. I had to ask for tests from her doctor this year when I thought that having hair on the stomach wasn't normal. She referred me to an endo who did some testing but said everything came back normal. I let it go for a few months and then went over the tests and realized she hadn't tested for everything that she should have. I never would have known what to ask but thankfully I found this forum as well and got some help. Once we had additional testing done, it came back that it was in fact PCOS. I even wrote in a couple of blood tests like Vitamin D and one other even though the doctor didn't think she should be tested. I thought, why not? As long as they're drawing blood might as well test for everything. LOL I'm in So Cal as well. It's so hard to see my daughter going through all of this.

Well I knew something was wrong where her period stopped completely for over a year she was 14 so I decided to take her to her doctor. The Doctor automatically did blood work and found her hormones where completely out of whack. Then he ordered sonograms and more blood work that was almost 2 yeas ago... that’s how she was diagnosed.. as for her being I/R I started noticing things her weight for instance was getting way out of control and she is a very active teenager plays high school sports and ride s her bike a lot just didn’t make sense.. Plus she started getting skin darkening and was complaining of migraines and also had hair growth on her lip and upper legs which at first was not alarming until the leg hair was coming in very thick.. So I started reading and it was all signs or I/R and that prompted me to get her to a gyno that specializes in PCOS.. It turned out the very first labs that where run on my daughter she was already I/R and should have started treatment. So unfortuanetly she went almost 2 years being untreated

is she just starting out? 1500 is very high to be starting out... She should ease back her dosage... for the first week do 500mg a day, then 1000 mg a day the second week, and 1500mg if her stomach subsides by the 4th week!

Keep in mind if she has a sensitive stomach or the Met isn't agreeing with her... she may need to do a lower dosage. Or look into getting the XR version of the Met. This might help big time for her...

Also you don't have to take it separately. If she wanted she could take all 1500mg after school with her dinner.. but agian 1500mg right off the bat surprises me.. I'm shocked the dr didn't say to ease into it

That’s exactly what I noticed today after reading some other posts.. So now I’m doubting my own sight I’m going to double check the RX when I get home. When I read the RX the DR. gave me it said 500 mg but I know she has to take it 3 times a day.. so now I’m not sure if she is taking 500 a day or 500 3 times a day.. Well if the case is she is taking 500 3X a day I’m going to take your advise and lessen the dosage my self till she adjusts

It would not surprise me if it says 500 3 x's a day, as that is a normal dosage.. but normally your dr should say "but ease into it if the s/e are overbearing" ... :(

Well I checked and yes its 500 3X a day, but we did figure out that if she takes it at dinner it kinda messes up her morning. So she is try to take it in the morning and at lunch but so far the full dose is not doing to much damage, the nausea is what she is having the hardest time dealing with.. So right now I told her to take 500 in the AM and then 1000 at lunch when she gets home.. And if that does not do the trick we will go to 500 in the am and 500 at lunch and in a couple weeks up to 1500.. Her appetite is completely gone and she is having a hard time with the low carb I need to try and be creative at meal time..

Yaya you could even start her off just at 500 once a day for 5 days, then take it up to 500 twice a day for 5 days and so forth ... if the symptoms don't gradually get better (expect them to last a week) then ask your dr about the XR version, I've heard the symptoms are less with them

yayas mom - Your daughter certainly is lucky to have you!! Seriously... the fact that you are being a health advocate for her and wanting to be creative with meal selection and everything... thats awesome!
I'm on met ER and I LOVE IT. it made the difference for me for sure compared to the regular stuff. I did notice that when I was increasing my dosage up to 1500mg I would have a few days of tummy problems with each increase.

great news!! it may be a rough couple of weeks so try to keep her on low GI foods and lots of snacks like nuts and protein and the transition should be easier. Glad she's getting some help for the underlying causes of PCOS!
