Hi. I have a beautifal 3 yr old daughter who has a lot of thick dark hair on her forearms and neck/back/bottom areas. I am wondering if anyone has seen this in their young daughters and what you recommend. I will start out by taking her to her Pediatrician, but I am hoping he recommends her to a Pediatric Endocrinologist. Do you think this is her starting PCOS? I would love to spare her the teasing/lack of self confidence that I had growing up. What do you all think?

I often wonder if my daughter will have it too. She has no real issues now she is 3 but I will be asking for referrals if anything comes up especially when she is in her teens I don't want her to go through all of this and be able to start early having kids. She also had a bunch of abdominal surgeries so I hope there isn't scar tissue or problems during her pregnancy. Its awful all this stuff we worry about with our kids isn't it?

I can't imagine how our daughters won't get PCOS. It scares the crap out of me, but at least we know what to look for. Since your DD is so young, it's probably too early to do the hormone b/w tests, but I could be wrong since I'm not a Dr! I'd ask her Ped and if you hit a brick wall there, call your RE (if you have one) and ask him/her for guidance. GL Let us know what you find out!

This may be old...but I was told in 1999 when I was pregnant with my first DD that PCOS actually is passed onto us from our father....so our son's daughters are who we should be concerned about?!??
I haven't asked or researched since then...I decided we have time and as stated, I think we'll see it in our DDs if it comes up...I don't believ it'd appear at 3...I think it may appear in the puberty years. That is when I noticed my "differences".

Yeah, I have no idea where my PCOS came from. Nobody on my moms side of the family ever had any kind of problems. On my dads side that we know of either.
But I also didn't start showing any weird signs until I was at the age for puberty.

PCOS doesnt show up till around puberty or just before. Some kids have the thicker hair and darker hair just because of genitics, someone in the family did. My niece is the same way and she is 3, my 7 yr old niece did but now that she is bigger its just not noticable like when she was 3. I wouldnt worry about it now, just always prepare that she has a good chance of getting it, and make sure you teach her about proper IR diet, exercise, and when old enough talk to her about it and amybe a gyn.

I was diagnosed as Stein Leventhal when I was 9
My twins just turned 9 and had blood tests at Columbia Presbyterian (NYC). I am worried sick about them. No signs of precocious puberty and I am not ready for "the talk" with them yet.
anyone else?
