 Good Morning, I am new to PCOS and to the website. I have been prescribed Met. and also have the option of taking Clomid. Is one drug better than the other for concieving? Are there better average results? I have been hesitant to take the clomid (twins run in the family) but would like your opionions.
Also has anyone been sick and also have uncontrolable itching with the met. Been on 1000 mg for about a month and these side effects have not gone away yet. Is this normal? :x
CMartini - A combo of Met and Clomid seems to offer the best chance of conceiving although many women conceive on Met alone. I am currently on 1500mg GlucophageXR and have done two rounds of clomid without acheiving pregnancy. Before my doctor would give me the clomid I had to go in for a discussion on all the possible problems/side effects/outcomes... I too was concerned about multiple births because they also run in my family. I was told that there is an increased chance of multiple births (mainly twins) with the clomid, but the risk seemed minimal to me... something like a 3% greater risk on the clomid.... that is a risk that I can live with because DH and I really want a child!
As far as the itchiness - I can't help you! However, as far as the sickness goes I believe that it depends on the person. Some people have no side effects, some have it go away in a few weeks, others it takes a longer time. I am (unfortunately) one that is still dealing with the sickness from Met - and NOT nausea!!! I started my Gluc in July of 2004... here I am almost 7 months later and I still get sick! I must say that it isn't nearly as often, (every few days instead of EVERY day) but it still stinks!! Actually, I was sick this morning..... One thing that I have found that if I eat something fatty (french fries....ice cream is the WORST) then I tend to get more sick. But for the first few months it was constant..... didn't matter what I ate!
Anyway, I hope this helps you out a bit..... just know that you are not alone!!!

I had to vote Met because that is how I got pregnant. It was actually Glucophage at the time, but now I am on the generic Metformin. However, I do know that many women who do not get pregnant on Met alone the first few months ADD the Clomid and that works well for them also.
In fact, I tried Clomid alone first (before Glucophage and Met were approved to treat PCOS), and that did nothing for me. When the insulin sensitzers became approved, my doctor switched me to that and I was pregnant on my second cycle and I actually had cycles without being induced.
Therefore, for me, the Clomid alone did not work, but the Met (Glucophage) alone did.
Therefore, my suggestion is to try the Met alone for a few months, and if you are not pregnant by then, ADD the Clomid for better possible results.
However, be aware that if you start using Metformin to treat your PCOS, you will likely have to stay on it for essentially life in order to keep it under control. You can also take it your entire pregnancy like I did in order to prevent miscarriage and mid-late trimester complications. But Insulin Sensitizers are probably the best way to treat PCOS anyway, and if it means being able to conceive, it is definitely the way to go. At least for me it has been. I can't say enough about it.
Good Luck!
