Hi Ladies,
I am visiting over here from the pregnancy board. I am currently 11 weeks pregnant with my first. I got a call from the doc today and I was told "the urine test I took over a week ago is showing that I have a severe UTI. Since the test was taken over a week ago and I have not had any treatment, it has probably only gotten worse."
GREAT!!!!
My question is... did any of you have UTI's while pregnant and what antibiotics did you take? Was everything okay?
My doc prescribed ampecillin. All my research said it is a class B drug and "fairly safe". I am not so down with that "fairly" word. I am sure I am being a total nudge about this, but any reassurance would be much apperciated.

I didn't take antibiotics but I know a friend of mine that has frequent UTI's during her pregnancy and she was on them most of her pregnancy and her baby turned out just fine. I had bells palsey with my daughter and they told me they wanted me to take steroids and valtrex which is used for herpes. I was like NO WAY. The pharmasist told me not to take them if I was pregnant but the OB and GP said take them. The only reason I ended up taking them is otherwise my face would be paralized forever. I did deliver preterm but that had nothing to do with the meds. Hannah is a super healthy 3 year old with a substantial IQ. I am not a big medicine person even less so when I am pregnant. My OB told me this pregnancy I could take stuff for MS but I have suffered in silence I just don't want to take the meds. With a UTI it has to be treated. If not it can lead to alot of problems and even preterm labor. So take the anitibiotics. And make sure you get frequent urine dips. The OB can give you the test strips to take home for in between your OB visits. Depending on how long you are on them also keep in mind you can get yeast infections also from being on antibiotics so you may want to consider adding in some yogurt to your diet everyday.

Hi! Congrats on your pregnancy! About the UTI's....
I had SIXTEEN while I was pregnant and they always gave me Macrobid. Emily was born healthy and sassy! The only thing about the Macrobid was it made me so sick at my stomach and when coupled with the Met, I stayed in the bathroom. (Sorry, TMI  )
HTH!

Come to think of it...I was also given macrobid when I got a UTI while ttc. It was rx'ed just in case I was pregnant that cycle (I wasn't). Didn't have any while I actually was pregnant, but that's because I only get them from drinking beer  .
My feeling is to take the antibiotic. It's probably safer than risking a full-blown infection that might affect the placenta, etc. If your doctor said it's safe, I'd go with them.
Good Luck & Congrats!!

Thanks ladies!!
I know I need to do this to protect myself and my nugget from something worse. Thank you very much for the help.
I'm no help on this one bc I didn't have a UTI during pregnancy. I have had one before and I must say - I knew it when I did!!!! I had to take AZO until I could get to the doc for meds. It was very painful. I'm surprised that your doc had to call you to inform you about it. Did you feel pain?

I had them really bad at the end of my pregnancy. They gave me amoxicillin which didnt really helped and gave me a yeast infection. I refused to take it after the 2nd one and they gave me macrobid instead which worked much better for me.

I just found out today that I have a UTI and I'm also taking Macrobid. It's a class B drug, and believe me, it's a lot safer to take the medication than to let the UTI get out of hand. Women have miscarried and delivered prematurely because of severe UTIs.
I also have a kidney stone, so that might be what caused my UTI.
