Hey everybody!

I was diagnosed recently with POS and given dianette pills. I now have regular periods but I have some hair growth and I have not seen any change with the pills. My doc is of little help. She just told me i had POS and gave me pills, without explaining what it actually is. Im just really looking for some information here. I researched it on the internet, some say it is curable, others not. Most women are worried about fertility but i dont understand why having POS makes you infertile? And does POS cause depression? Do i need a specific diet? :? I will appreciate your help!

Thanks

Hey,
To answer some of your questions, PCOS is not cureable, but is treatable. One of the best things is to loose weight if you are heavier. Metforming can help with this by controlling your insulin because many of us with PCOS are insulin resistant.
PCOS does not exactly make you infertile but it certainly makes conceiving a struggle. The reason for this is that many women with PCOS don't ovulate. You have probably noticed this when you stopped getting your period.
As for PCOS and depression, I'm not sure, but I know there are a lot of ladies who do have both.
Hope this helps.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick reply! Sorry to bombard you with questions, but how do u kno whether ur insulin resistant or not? Do u need to do some sort of test? Actually my periods have not stopped but their are just long gaps between them, the Dianette has made it more accurate.

And yes you did help! :D

To test for insulin resistance, many docs will do a GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test), which is really tons of fun. You have to fast for 12 hours, have blood taken, drink the sugar drink and sit for 2 more hours and then have blood taken again. Some doctors don't even bother because most PCOS patients are insulin resistant, which leads to a lot of our weight gain. If you can't get on metformin, it can have some nasty side effects, try a low carb diet, or a glycemic index diet.

PM if you want to know more.
