HI! I recently moved to the area and wondering if anyone has a tip on a good doctor or practice. I am not trying to conceive at this point. I really want to get my PCOS under control. I have not had any luck in getting a doctor to listen to me.
Specifically I read Christina M.'s post explaining that she is with the military in the area. We are too. Wondering what your experience has been like with military doctors. I have not had any luck with finding one that is educated about PCOS.
I welcome all advice/info about doctors in the hampton roads area. Specifically military doctors in the area.
Thanks,
Cyn

My husband is in the army. But the closest RE I could get was a Dr. Austin at Portstmouth naval hospital. I guess he was good. He started me on met and told me to come back in 6 months if I wasn't preg yet. He knew quite a bit about PCOS. So I would rec him. As far as military docs are concerned, I never expect too much from them. He did have a student from the jones institute working with him that day. Hope that helps some-Lynda

I don't know if either of you ladies are still in Hampton Roads area, but I pray you PCS soon. We are PCSing in June to LAngley. After reading on here I'm so thankful that I have my four blessings already. I've seen RE's at Walter Reed, DC and at Wilford HAll, TX both of which I have NOTHING NICE to say about them. Walter Reed IF care was so bad I went Tricare standard and went to a civilian RE.

Still here in williamsburg. As a matter of fact I have a daughter who was born 12/16/06, around the same age as yours. I had my baby at langley AFB and loved it. I guess all military docs are different. So far I really can't complain. We have tricare standard with tricare prime benefits because we live too far from post. so my daughter has a civillian ped. You may like the langley area. When we first moved down here we lived nextdoor to AFB housing.

pamperedcheflady, you went to walter reed??? My dh works on base under the fire department, doenst have anything to do with the hospital, hes a fire alarm tec, but every time I hear the name I pay attention. I dont know much about the hospital, but I know after they said they were going to close the place down a few yrs ago, all the good workers jumped ship and found better jobs, leaving the "Im government, I dont have to work" people there to cause problems from lazyness.

I personally never saw a military Dr. The RE I was seeing that got me PG was Dr. Poe-Ziegler at the New Hope Center ( I love it there) in VA Beach.
Has anyone heard or had experience w/ Dr. Shapiro at Navy Medical in Portsmouth, VA?
I did have Dr. Austin, was on metformin through him. My husband recently got back from deployment, and I called Dr. Austin's sec'y to ask Dr. Austin a question, only to find out he is now working in OB. So she set me up w/ an appt. w/ Dr. Shapiro.
I'm frustrated to not have continuous care (I know, that's the standard around here) and I'm wondering if I should wait for my appt. w/ Dr. Shapiro, if he's any good? Or should I just go to the TriCare office and ask for civilian care?
Does anyone have anything to share on Dr. Shapiro? Thank you!

I saw Dr. Shapiro for my U/S to confirm a viable heartbeat when i first found out i was pregnant. I was so excited and nervous about finally being pregnant, i really dont remember much about him. I remember he was little and not very talkative. I even remember saying something to one of his nurses how quiet he was. Then i saw him again a week later to do another U/S and i think he was a little more personable. HTH-Lynda
Thank you, Lynda!
I'm anxious...I just want to have a doctor who cares about our getting pregnant as much as we care about our getting pregnant! I'm hoping he will help...
Thanks again!

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS in April by a doctor who didn't seem to take it seriously.
I actually saw a doctor today who was very friendly and helpful.
Her name is Patrice C. Malena. She is in the Oyster Point section of Newport News. She was knowledgeable and sensitive.
The number there is 757-874-8696

Hi, PCOS Forum,
I am Patrice Malena, and I LOVE working with women with PCOS. I am a Nurse Practitioner and have worked on PCOS since my days at NIH in Bethesda MD many years ago.
I have relocated and now work for Reproductive Health Care Associates with Dr. Sharon Byrd, (who is a PCOS-friendly MD and infertility doc too), in Virginia Beach VA. Our phone number is (757) 363-2800. Accepting new patients and MOST insurance plans.
Blessings,
Patrice
