I have PCOS and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Also likely have adrenal fatigue (crave salt constantly). Appears that I am insulin tolerant, too. Wanted to start a thread on 40pluser's experiences with menopause.
About a year ago, my periods went from flood waters to minor rivulet trickles. My symptoms went from really predictable to all over the map from cycle to cycle: water retention, weight gain, bloating, extreme fatigue, irritability, lack of concentration, appetite changes, more hair loss, and so on. Did I mention irritability? The actual cycle is regulated with BCP.
Am 44 and my mom went through the change at 44 also. She had worse PCOS and much worse experience with the change.
What have been your experiences, symptoms, solutions, and so on. If I do not find some relief soon, I'm afraid my son's will revolt. :p
Best regards,

Hi there,

I'm not there yet at 47 - at least I don't think so, but am interested in finding out about PCOS and the menopause also.

I've been dealing with PCOS since diagnosed at age (14).I managed the symptoms with BCP until I was ready to conceive. After (1) miscarriage I used Clomid. When perimenopause kicked-in at age (43) - My weight and health really became a problem: my cholesterol went up and I watched the numbers on the scale increase everyday until I had put on 20lbs. Then I was diagnosed with thyroid disease (Hyshmotos) and now I'm taking metformin, spirolactone, and thyroid medication. I have a section of hair that is very thin and sometimes, half of my right eyebrow hair falls out. I've gained a total of 30lbs since menopause and I'm having a hella-of-time getting the scale to budge from 180 lbs. although I exercise and have fairly good eating habits. I don't think this metformin is working for me and I'm asking for something different at my next dr. appt. I'm never giving-up the fight for my health, because the quaility of my life is essential for my happiness. I can't have one without the other.
