I was recently diagnosed with PCOS by an ob/gyn and an endocronlogist, I'm eighteen and while I do have overian cysts, I'm lacking the other symptoms. Overall I'm shakey on whether I even HAVE PCOS as I'm not overweight, nor obese, I don't have facial hair or horrible acne. My LH/FSH levels are off slightly but other than that and I don't get my period without birth control often at all.

I'm confused by the fact that I was given birth control because to me that is only treating the symptom, the ovarian cysts instead of the insulin resistance which, from what I've read is the cause. I was wondering if someone could possibly explain to me the logic? I'm sure there is logic I just don't understand.

Also, the two hour insulin resistance test, I didn't have one, and I was wondering if I should push to have that done in order to clarify whether I really do have PCOS.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this

Hello Cecelia,

They found ovarian cysts when I was 17 and I did not have any other signs at all. At that point they stated it could be PCOS but said because of my age and the fact that I wasn't TTC that I should just be on birth control to prevent and to help with my periods. They told me there were other ways to treat PCOS, but because I only had the irregular period with cysts at that point in time that there was no need.

Now I have since been fully diagnosed and was told that I should just stay on the pill, but since my husband and I are TTC I stopped and am looking at different ways to regulate my cycle.

The doctor most likely because of you lack of other symptoms does not see a need to check or treat the insulin resistance which is said to be a known contributor to PCOS. I still have no problems with my insulin at all.

I hope this helps.
