Just curious if any of you have heard of TTC and the doctor prescribing Provera for 10 days. I've read that it can cause birth defects if taken in the first 4 months of pregnancy.
HELP
I am not a doctor/nurse, but I read this in my health-plan's online pharmacy info:
MEDROXYPROGESTERONE - ORAL
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Amen, Cycrin, Progestone, Provera
"This medication must not be used during pregnancy because it may harm an unborn baby, especially during the first 4 months of pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. "
I would definitely talk to your doctor about the medication and its indications. If he/she is trying to have you induce a period *before* TTC, then at least you will know to use birth control until that point. If your doc is concerned about low luteal-phase progesterone, then a safer alternative (such as Clomid, which indirectly increases post-ov progesterone, or perhaps a natural progesterone - the use of which is controversial in its efficiency at preventing miscarriage) could be discussed.
So glad you caught that!

p.s. Here is a site that also warns against Provera/pregnancy:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/medmaster/a682470.html
"Medroxyprogesterone has not been shown to prevent miscarriage and may harm the fetus."
