View Full Version : Help - Weight GAIN on Spiro

Within a week of taking Spiro, I gained 5 - 6 pounds! My Tinea scale (one that measures body fat by measuring the amount of water in the body -- theoretically, more water = less body fat, since muscle retains more water than fat) shows my water-percentage up pretty significantly.

Read: I am retaining MORE water, and weigh MORE pounds, since I began Spiro. Particularly in my breasts & face.

I am still exercising a LOT and watching my diet. There is no other obvious explanation for the weight gain.

My understanding about Spironolactone is that the opposite should have happened...

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Within 36 hours of stopping the Spiro, I lost 5 pounds already. The weight fluctuations are still pretty wide within the day (it's only been 2 days), but it's hovering closer to my pre-Spiro weight as opposed to my on-Spiro-weight.

I do not understand this at all. Why would I have gained weight (I'm still convinced it's mainly water weight) while taking a diuretic?

Weird! ;)

If anyone has any ideas, or had this experience, please still let me know. I have a doc appointment tomorrow to discuss alternatives. I'm getting pretty discouraged...

Thanks,
Tish

Heya Tish,

Spiro is a diuretic of sorts, but its primary function is not to lose water weight gain. The primary function of Spiro is an Anti-Androgen (Testosterone). My doctor put me on both Spiro and Lasix (Fluerisimide (sp?))
