hey girls,

any of you take metformin AND are of a normal weight AND don't have diabetes?

my endo wouldn't give me it- unless my sugar levels went way up or if i gained a lotta weight. even though i practically begged her. she said "keep up the low-gi diet and excercise 1/2 hour a day", which i am doing.

also, i was not given spironolactone by my dermatologist- because she claims it is not effective enough (my testosterone levels are "normal"). instead she's pushing me to have laser treatment- which they also offer at their clinic!

aaaand, i am using differin on my face- but it burns and peels my skin, ouch and ugh, i can't even put baby oil on it without it hurting to hell- so i have started only using it on affected/prone areas. is it still effective then?

any advice much appreciated.

I had the same problem to start with. They wouldn't give me metformin as I'm a normal weight, they only gave in after 3 rounds of clomid didn't make me O. I've been on it for 5 months now. I would keep pushing as there is a lot of evidence that even women without diagnosed insulin resistance, and not overweight can still benefit. Good luck!

Can you get a new doc who knows mor about PCOS? My insulin levels are 'normal' and before I got pregnant I was actually underweight - but I swear I owe my children to the low gi diet I put myself on.
You know yourself better than a doc - plus as they always say 'Get a second opinion'

Spirp didn't work for me - and I am getting laser treatements - but I am not sure why your dermo wouldn't at least let you try the spiro? Probably because she'll make more $ off the laser ;) Again - get a second opinion.

I as well am probably considered a little underweight, but my doc still felt that Met was appropriate treatment. I was only able to tolerate 500mg, but I could really tell the difference in my insulin levels. I had less hypoglycemic symptoms such as jitters and grumpiness when it was meal time. My insulin levels were in the normal range, but were still suggestive of IR in my docs opinion since there was an 8 fold increase in my fasting to 2 hour levels.

I'd get a second opinion if I were you.

thanks girls.

since then i have had my quick blood test results,

sugar level is 5.5 n/mol
cholestorol is 4,
HDL= 1.8
bad cholestorol= 2,
no thyroid problem.

as these are 'great' results the endo said she definitely will NOT be giving me metformin- unless i want to get pregnant, and then suggested the pill again (...................) to regulate my periods- they really shouldn't say that, as it only shows their ignorance! (the pill messes me up and i end up bleeding all the time). for the record, i'm not looking to become preg.

will metformin be of any benefit to me with normal testosterone and normal blood sugar levels at a normal weight? my acne is worsening again, bad timing cos i go on holiday real soon!

however, i am going to seek a second opinion as it's clear to me these professionals do not know what they are dealing with.

if anybody knows of any specialists capable of dealing with pcos in the netherlands, please let me know!

thank you so much for the advice.
