ok, i am comfused. About 2 months ago I switched from regular met to the met ER because of horrible side effects on reg met. I am currently on 1000mg of Met ER and wanted to up my dose because I feel that this dose is not working anymore for me. I have started to gain a bit of weight that I previously lost and my facial hair seems to be coming back, and my hair on my head seems to be falling out more than usual.
Anyway, I asked my endo if I could up the dose and she said that was the highest dose I could be on with the ER version because it is like being on 2000mg of the reg. version. This doesn't make sense and I have seen that other people who are on the ER version are on higher doses.
Can anyone help? Is my docter wrong? Any suggestions?
Thanks

I'm on 1500 mg of the ER and I just got put on it two weeks ago. For me it seems like the only dosage that has finally worked. I just told my doctor I had done research on what seemed to work for others with PCOS and he gave it to me.

What do you mean by working for you. What changes have you noticed? If you don't mind me asking.

With the higher dosage my skin has started to clear up and I have started to finally loose weight. It has been too short of a time to tell if it has made a difference with hair growth.

Are you on any other medications as well, or just the Metformin? I'm on 1000mgs of Metformin XR, and the twice daily injection, Byetta. It was only after I began the Byetta WITH Metformin XR that I really began to see results. My hair began to grow again, I lost weight, my insulin is finally normal, and I actually feel good. If for some reason the Metformin alone isn't enough, talk to your doctor about Byetta.

I am just on Metformin ER, spiro, and provera. I am not sure what that injection is that you are taking. Is it to get pregnant? I am done having kids and am trying to work on myself right now. What does that injection do for you? That is very interesting that you had such great results with that. I need something because my weight loss has only been about 5 pounds in 4 months. What I am really concerned with it the weight loss and hair loss and the facial hair.
Thanks for your help.

The injection is called Byetta. It's actually an injection used in diabetics to make them produce insulin, but has been very successful in women with PCOS who have insulin resistance. It makes our bodies produce only the insulin we need, and when used with Metformin, the Metformin helps your body absorb the insulin produced, making your body function somewhat normal. Definitely talk to your doctor about it, it's been great for me! :0)

I just got put on 1500 of the slow release. It just says 2 tablets daily. Since they are the extended release do I take 2 together or split them up?
My hair was falling out on the regular metformin and I wasn't sure if it was the metformin or the IR causing this. I have been off the met for about a month for some testing and have been taking biotin. My hair has stopped falling out so we will see when I start the ER met if my hair stops falling out again.

Actually . . . I've recently (maybe 2 months ago?) started taking 2000mg ER/XR, apparently they don't come in 1000 pills though, so I've got to take 2-500mg twice a day. I haven't had any problems since upping my dosage.
