I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS and my Dr. gave me 500 mg of Metformin daily. Have any of you had success at this dosage? I know it is likely that I will need to increase the dosage. How long should I wait to notice a change before talking to my Dr. about an increase?

Most doctors increase every two weeks until you are at a dose they want you at. If he hasn't said anything about it call in a few weeks and ask. I didn't notice any changes until I started taking 1000mg. Know I am thinking about asking my doctor to if he will up it.
Good luck with the met. If you notice any side effect, give it time they do go away.

I was started on 500mg in April and at the same time started following South Beach...in an attempted to avoid side effects. I noticed results almost immediately. I had tons more energy, I never take a nap anymore, I slept better and I think I lost about 3lbs in the first week. I've since lost about 22lbs and am down three sizes. My energy level remained high except for right before my period. I now also have pms, which I never had before.
My doc saw me after 6 weeks of being on the Met to recheck my A1C and see how I was doing. She decided then not to up my dosage because I was having positive results.
I would suggest giving it a few weeks or a month to see how you like it and if you notice any changes. If you don't see anything call your doc and make an appointment to discuss your concerns. He/she may be willing to up it then.
Good luck!

I started with one pill of 500 mg and then moved up to two pills of 500 mg. I have yet to move up to a higher doseage. I haven't had any blood work done since I was diagnosed. I think when I go back for my yearly in November. I going to ask him about it.
