So, I know that it's common for people to use birth control every now and then in order to skip their periods. I started taking mine (sprintec, generic for orthocyclen) last month. I finished an entire pack, and have finished the first week of my second pack. However, I'm going out of the country in a few weeks. The way it works out, with my birth control, I'm due to start my period the day after I arrive. I'd really prefer to not have my period for half of my trip, but I'm scared to skip it so soon after starting taking it. Does anyone know if this would be alright, or should I just call my gyno and ask? Thanks in advanced!

I have done this once--it worked, but the cycle I had when I let my pills run out was a whopper. I've had friends say they've done it, too, but they had bloating and other symptoms that were less-than-desirable. Call your gyn's office and talk to a nurse, but since there are bcps which only allow one cycle every 3 months, I'd say you'll probably be fine. Just remember that bcps can increase your risk of blood clots--if you're flying a distance, make sure to stay hydrated (water, no booze) and get up & move often on the plane. ;)

Have a great trip! :)

Hopefully it's not too late. Here's the deal, it works with some pills and not with others. I worked a year and a half at Planned Parenthood, so this question came up A LOT. I don't know enough about Orthocyclen to be able to tell you, but I know that it does not work with OrtrhoTriCyclen Lo.

For some, it decreases effectiveness (not good!), and for others it won't decrease effectiveness, but it might actually not work (i.e. you'd still spot possibly), but that might be worth it to spot versus a full period.

I would ask your gyno or pharmacist to be sure. I know you can do it with pills like OrthoNovum 1/35 in which the whole month is a set level of hormone (except your last week . . .).

So, yes, CHECK before you do it.
