Hi

I'm just wondering, What you do with your metformin dose if you fall pregnant. My Dr has said to come off it if I conceive but I have read that it is good to stay on it. I would hate to come off it and my body react with a miscarriage if I did conceive. I have been taking 1500mg since last sept and now I am 7 days to a pregnancy test. I thought about cutting down to 1000mg now and stay on that until twelve weeks. What do you think. I think Metformin is quite new over here in the uk for treating pcos as I asked 3 years ago for it for my pcos and they said no but last year they said yes to me.

What did you do or what do you think is the best course of action. To be honest I think my Dr is wrong telling me to come off it the day I get pregnant, don't you agree?

My doc wanted me to remain on it until week 36 and a friend's doc wanted her to come off immediately as your physician is recommending, so it varies quite a bit. I believe there are even women who continued throughout the pg and BFing and never stopped. Met is believed to help prevent m/c in the first trimester, so many docs recommend that. I wouldn't lower the dosage until you know that you are preggo. It wouldn't be good to yo-yo back and forth with the dosage each cycle. But I don't see a problem with lowering the dosage to 1000mg for the first trimester. In my understanding, Met is believed to be safe during pg but there are no conclusive tests completed proving this to be true. I actually chose to stop taking Met at 19 weeks because of this.

Thanks for your reply wildflower. I will stick to the 1500 until I get a good preg result. Fingers crossed for that. I will then push the Dr for me to stay on the met for at least the first 16 weeks. Ive already had two miscarriages so don't want to risk that happening again. No sir reeee.

Anyone else please.

Wendy, I don't know about staying on Met while pregnant but I just wanted to send you a hug and wish you all the best.
Hope everything goes well.

Christine, now that has made me smile, Thanks so much!! Isn't it lovely to know there are people out there that you can confide in, understand and that care. I can't talk to my family as, well they don't understand what I'm going through and say the usual "it will happen if its Gods will, your trying too hard" you have three already. ect ect.

I'm not pregnant yet but my doctor already told me that when I do conceive, he prefers I stay on met until baby has a heartbeat. I don't know how many weeks/months is that. He says that's a safe way to prevent miscarriage risk early on.
