I have been on metformin - 500mg, spironolactone - 100mg, and yasmin for the last month. I got my period a few days ago and was just some spotting. Well yesterday I woke up with horrible cramps and spent the whole day in the bathroom because I had to change a tampon with a pad every hour. Today I am still changing a pad every hour and have big clots. Sorry about the graffics. I called my endo today and she said this is normal. Well this in not normal for me. The last period I had was in march and she said it was because of all the lining I may have built up. But I have gone a year without having a period and when I did finally get one, it was nothing like this. Actually, I have never had any bleeding like this before.
So my question is, is this normal? has anyone else had this after their first month on pills? is this the medication doing this?

Sorry so long and would appreciate any input.
Thanks

It can be "normal", just keep an eye open for signs of hemorraging.

What happens is that, for us PCOS'ers, quite often we do not ovulate properly. It the corpus lutem (what's left of the follicle after ovulation) that produces progesterone for about 2 weeks. If there's no pregnancy to take over progesterone production, the sudden lack of progesterone creates a withdrawal bleed (your period). If there's no ovulation, there's no proper period, although the lining can build up to the point where it starts to fall off by itself, sometimes mimicking a period. This is not a full "cleaning out", and the "leftover" lining can still be quite thick.

For some of us, too, the hormonal imbalances also affect how the lining builds up, so when you start over-riding your hormones with BCP or Provera, it can trigger a huge bleed and a "period from h#ll"!!!!

In my regular cycle, I usually get a day or two of "bleeding like a stuck pig" and having to "double-pad" with a super-heavy-duty tampon and pad, and having to change the tampon every couple of hours. This doesn't last more than a couple of days, though (slowing down to a trickle for the rest of my period), and as my IR has improved, it's started to settle down some.

If you suspect that you are bleeding too much, don't hesitate to get to your emergency room as fast as possible! Signs that something is going wrong - feeling "faint"/dizzy, white lips/fingernail beds, bright red blood, having the flow "push" out the tampon, disorientation. There may be more, but this is the "quick list".

Take care, and I hope you are feeling better soon!

When I started on Yasmin I had just finished a heavy period. I waited about a week to start the Yasmin and after being on the bcp for a few days I started bleeding again, having larger clots than when I actually had my period. Needing to change pad and tampon as often as you are now. I even had to use an heavy flow overnight pad and a super tampon at the same time and still had to change both within 2 hours. I even had tampons start to come out after 2-3 hours ,my flow was that heavy. I put up with this for almost a month then decided to go off the bcp. I bled for about 2 more days and have not had a period since going off the pill. I have not taken any bcp in about 2 weeks and have not had a period yet since stopping the pill. For me Yasmin wasn't the answer, especially if you want to remain making love to your significant other. My husband was getting upset because I was bleeding all the time. I was taking Yas to prevent pregnancy while losing weight, didn't want to end up close to 300 pounds if I was to gain 50 pounds during pregnancy and also wanted to prevent some complications that may occur with pregnancy and being overweight. So now am on no medication except Vitamin B6,12 and folic acid, and if we end up getting pregnant at this weight then so be it.

This happens to me quite frequently when I finally do have a period. I have to induce one with progesterone at least every 1-3 months or this will be the norm. We build up lining and don't shed it properly with PCOS.
